AM4 Lives: AMD Ryzen 5 5500X3D CPU Review & Benchmarks - [hardware] 05:31 PM EDT - Sep,01 2025 - post a comment
AMD is still launching AM4 CPUs, which is awesome since the socket is now nearly 10 years old. The AMD Ryzen 5 5500X3D CPU is for the Latin America market and builds upon the AM4 X3D CPU lineage with a lower frequency 6-core, 12-thread part that has the same vertically stacked cache as the 5600X3D, 5700X3D, and 5800X3D style of CPUs, just on a lower-end part. The 5500X3D likely takes fallout from the manufacturing process and then respins it as a new model, allowing AMD to salvage silicon while theoretically dropping the price in specific markets. AMD has previously done this with the 5600X3D, which was a Micro Center exclusive in the US due to low intended volume.

NVIDIA GeForce 581.08 WHQL Driver - [gaming] 04:06 AM EDT - Aug,23 2025 - post a comment NVIDIA has released the latest version of its GeForce drivers, the GeForce 581.08 WHQL Game Ready. The latest version comes with Game Ready optimizations by adding support for Global DLSS Overrides and NVIDIA Smooth Motion support for GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs, which was announced during the NVIDIA Gamescom showcase. The new driver also fixes several bugs. For example, it stops Cyberpunk 2077 from crashing when you use Photo Mode with Path Tracing. It also fixes the slowdown caused by the last driver (580.88) in Marvel Rivals. In Forza Motorsport, the game will no longer crash when using Smooth Motion with the NVIDIA App overlay. On top of that, Gray Zone Warfare and ARK: Survival Ascended should now run more smoothly and crash less often.
And that's not all. The NVIDIA GeForce 581.08 WHQL driver also fixes some other problems. It stops a possible memory leak when using NVENC hardware encoding. It also fixes an issue where the monitor flickered after turning it off and back on when the NVIDIA App was installed. On top of that, it fixes several problems with the NVIDIA App game filters.
If you're playing Mafia: The Old Country, you should avoid installing this new driver. Just like the older 580.97 driver, it causes serious visual problems, like screen artifacts and crashes. Right now, the only driver that works well with the game is 580.88. I've already reported this to NVIDIA, and they are currently working on a fix. |
Windows 11 24H2 Security Update Causes SSD/HDD Failures and Potential Data Corruption - [security] 02:45 AM EDT - Aug,18 2025 - post a comment A significant security update rolled out by Microsoft with the Windows 11 24H2 (KB5063878) release is causing widespread issues for users, with reports surfacing that the update can render SSDs and HDDs inaccessible and may potentially corrupt user data. The issue began when users started experiencing installation failures with error code 0x80240069 on the KB5063878 update, but Microsoft’s subsequent hotfix seemed to alleviate those issues. Unfortunately, that did not mark the end of the saga.
As of this writing, Microsoft has not issued an official fix for the storage drive disappearance issue. Users are advised to avoid installing the KB5063878 update if possible, especially if relying on large file transfers or critical SSD/HDD storage. For those affected, unplugging the impacted drive and reconnecting it may temporarily restore visibility, but this is not an assured solution and may not prevent future data loss or corruption. Routine data backups and delaying installation of the problematic update are strongly recommended.

WhatsApp's latest update is a huge "convenience" for group chats - [internet] 03:05 AM EDT - Aug,12 2025 - post a comment WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature in beta for Android version 2.25.23.5 that gives group admins the ability to control who can view the group invite link and associated QR code. Before this change, only admins could access the invite link, creating more work for them. Currently, the feature is rolling out to some beta testers and will be available to more users over the coming weeks.
With this new feature, admins will be able to choose to make the invite link for the group visible to all members, not just other admins, boosting convenience. This includes the QR code, which can also be seen by all if the setting is enabled. By default, the feature is turned off to ensure the privacy and security of the group, unless the admin chooses to enable it.
This feature will be useful for groups of a public nature designed to attract lots of people such as fan communities. It should help to reduce friction and delays for members who want to invite others to the group and it will likely lead to greater participation and growth in community groups.
While admins will hope this works for their group, the ability for anyone to share an invite may end up being abused. If this turns out to be the case, admins will be able to disable the option at any time through the group settings. When the setting is turned off, WhatsApp will display a warning that the group invite link will be reset automatically. This ensures that any links shared while the option was on will no longer be valid.
Both admins and group members will benefit from this feature once it's rolled out more widely. For admins, there will be a reduced workload as you no longer have to manually send links to members. Meanwhile, group members will benefit from the autonomy to invite new participants without needing to ask for permission each time.
Describing the feature, WABetaInfo said: "This convenience may encourage participation while still leaving admins in full control since they decide whether or not to share the invite link with all members, maintaining oversight over who can access and distribute it." |

WhatsApp finally adds a useful photo feature for Android users - [internet] 05:25 PM EDT - Aug,09 2025 - post a comment WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature to share motion photos in chats, groups, and channels in the latest beta (version 2.25.22.29) for Android. The feature allows users to send photos that have short bursts of movement and sound.
This is not the first time we've heard about this feature, WABetaInfo reports that it was under development in version 2.25.8.12, but now more beta testers are starting to get it. If you're a beta tester but don't have it yet, it may take a few weeks to roll out for you.
Motion photos are made possible by including a recording of the moments before and after a picture is taken, including the audio. They make for more dynamic content than a static image thanks to the movement and audio which makes it a bit more immersive. It can also help users relive memories more vividly compared to a static photo. |
OpenAI announces ChatGPT changes following user feedback - [briefly] 05:16 PM EDT - Aug,09 2025 - post a comment Earlier this week, OpenAI announced GPT-5, its most powerful model to date. The rollout of GPT-5 to ChatGPT users drew a lot of criticism, as OpenAI immediately replaced all existing models, including the popular GPT-4o and o3, with the new GPT-5. ChatGPT Plus subscribers are also unhappy with GPT-5 due to its low usage limits. ChatGPT Plus plan users can send only up to 80 messages every three hours. After reaching this limit, ChatGPT switches to GPT-5 mini until the limit resets. Previously, ChatGPT Plus users had unlimited access to the o3 and o4 mini thinking models.
Based on user feedback over the past two days, OpenAI is making the following changes to ChatGPT:
- The rate limits for Plus and Team plans have been doubled for the weekend.
- Next week, OpenAI will roll out mini versions of GPT-5 and GPT-5 Thinking to take over until the limits reset.
- GPT-5 Thinking and GPT-5 Pro options are now available in the main model picker.
- The GPT-4o model is also available to Plus and Team users. Users can go to the ChatGPT web interface and select the 'Show legacy models' option to enable GPT-4o.
Sam Altman confirmed on Reddit that they will monitor GPT-4o usage to determine how long to support it. During a Reddit AMA session yesterday, Sam Altman and other key OpenAI employees responded to several user questions. Here are some highlights from the AMA session:
-
OpenAI may introduce another paid plan that would fall between ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 per month, and ChatGPT Pro, which costs $200 per month.
-
When the GPT-5 rollout began yesterday, the model autoswitcher experienced issues, leading to poor responses for some user queries on ChatGPT.
-
OpenAI has not seen significant demand for long context lengths from its users but is open to supporting it if there is sufficient interest. Since they are compute-constrained, they want to focus on other priorities. Michelle Pokrass from the OpenAI team wrote that they would have liked to offer longer context-up to 1 million tokens-in GPT-5, particularly for API use cases, but due to high GPU demand, they did not.

Apple Responds to US Antitrust Lawsuit - [crime-law] 03:33 AM EDT - Aug,03 2025 - post a comment Apple has submitted its initial legal response to the US Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit accusing it of a "smartphone monopoly". The government's lawsuit focuses on Apple's restrictions on third parties in five specific areas: "Super apps", Cloud-streaming games, Messaging apps, Smartwatches, and Digital wallets. Apple contends that it allows third parties to offer all five on its platforms. Apple also calls out what it says are unfair or arbitrary metrics used to support the claim of a monopoly: measuring market share of "performance smartphones", and measuring by revenue instead of units sold. |
