TikTok Adds Community Notes - [internet]
03:33 AM EDT - Aug,03 2025 - post a comment TikTok has launched Footnotes, a crowd-sourced fact-checking feature similar to Community Notes on other social networks. Anyone can see and rate Footnotes on helpfulness. To contribute a Footnote, users must qualify and apply to the program. Footnotes is powered be a "bridging" system that looks for "a broad level of consensus" among contributions. TikTok says Footnotes are intended not just for corrections, but also for adding relevant details and context. To qualify to contribute Footnotes, "users must be in the U.S., have had an account for at least 6 months, and no recent Community Guidelines violations." TikTok says nearly 80,000 users currently qualify. The TikTok app is still in unique legal limbo in the US, where it has technically been banned by law, but the current administration has committed to non-enforcement of that law. |
Apple Responds to US Antitrust Lawsuit - [crime-law]
03:33 AM EDT - Aug,03 2025 - post a comment Apple has submitted its initial legal response to the US Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit accusing it of a "smartphone monopoly". The government's lawsuit focuses on Apple's restrictions on third parties in five specific areas: "Super apps", Cloud-streaming games, Messaging apps, Smartwatches, and Digital wallets. Apple contends that it allows third parties to offer all five on its platforms. Apple also calls out what it says are unfair or arbitrary metrics used to support the claim of a monopoly: measuring market share of "performance smartphones", and measuring by revenue instead of units sold. |

The vulnerability, designated as CVE-2025-48817, affects multiple versions of Windows and poses significant security risks for organizations that rely on Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connections.
Microsoft has released comprehensive security updates addressing CVE-2025-48817 across its entire Windows ecosystem. The affected platforms span from legacy systems, including Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7, to current versions such as Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2022. Specific build numbers for patched versions include 10.0.26100.4652 for Windows 11 24H2 and 10.0.22631.5624 for Windows 11 23H2. The Remote Desktop client for Windows Desktop has been updated to version 1.2.6353.0, while the Windows App Client reaches version 2.0.559.0.

Since spam gets filtered out of your primary inbox in most cases, another major annoyance that many users currently face is unwanted emails from websites that they may have knowingly or unknowingly subscribed to. Now, Google is implementing a robust mechanism to get rid of this problem in Gmail as well.
Google has started rolling out a new feature in Gmail that enables its users to unsubscribe from certain email senders in a matter of seconds. This is made possible through a Manage subscriptions view that can be accessed from the left navigation panel. Once you click on it, you'll get a dedicated view showing you a list of senders, sorted by how frequently they blast you with emails.
You can simply click the Unsubscribe button next to whichever senders are annoying you the most with frequent emails. You'll be greeted with a prompt asking you to confirm if you want to be removed from the mailing lists of the particular sender, and you just have to acknowledge that. However, Google has cautioned that it may take a few days for senders to stop contacting you via mailing lists.
This is a particularly useful feature, and one that can come in really handy when you are getting those "You have an invitation" emails from LinkedIn, or the likes |
