Well before Peter Jackson put Bilbo's story on screen (though after Rankin/Bass premiered their animated adaptation) the USSR's Vladimir Latyshev directed the very first live-action version of Tolkien's "The Hobbit." It may not have the CGI gloss of the modern trilogy, but at least it has subtitles!
