has an interesting bit on a hidden feature in Windows that could potentially
be a security issue and eventually exploited.
The trick is that Internet Explorer 6 and 7 beta can be fooled into running
Windows desktop shortcuts instead of going to the Internet. For example,

It even works with hidden files.
For people like me who hate hidden files and always show all files, this wouldn't really be much cause for alarm. If in plain view that kind of thing would stick out like a sore thumb. Maybe a rootkit kind of situation could completely hide such a file, but by then you would already have control of the user's machine, so why would you need to redirect webpages to executables?
I just don't see this adding much to hackers or virus writers arsenal. |
