Intel has published a paper describing a simplified version of the x86_64 instruction set architecture, called x86-s. In the proposal, Intel lays out plans to remove 16-bit and 32-bit legacy modes from x86_64 and only support 64-bit long mode. Goodbye 8086 real mode, goodbye 386 protected mode!
