The reason torrents have totally taken over don't really have anything to do with obfuscation or avoiding legal troubles, and everything to do with the fact that the more computers that get on a torrent, the faster everyone on it will get the data. This is the polar opposite of what happens with direct downloads.
Bittorrent is just an incredible way to move a lot of data to a lot of places very quickly by utilizing a lot of bandwidth simultaneously.
The fact that it's a lot harder to contain than direct downloads is a bonus for some but not the main draw.
There are numerous fully legit uses of the technology, one of the best known ones being World of Warcraft updates. To move the updates quickly to millions of people the client uses torrenting. |
