Microsoft says it hasn't been able to shake Russian state hackers - [security] 11:10 AM EST - Mar,09 2024 - post a comment Microsoft said Friday it's still trying to evict the elite Russian government hackers who broke into the email accounts of senior company executives in November and who it said have been trying to breach customer networks with stolen access data.
The hackers from Russia's SVR foreign intelligence service used data obtained in the intrusion, which it disclosed in mid-January, to compromise some source-code repositories and internal systems, the software giant said in a blog and a regulatory filing.
A company spokesman would not characterize what source code was accessed and what capability the hackers gained to further compromise customer and Microsoft systems. Microsoft said Friday that the hackers stole "secrets" from email communications between the company and unspecified customers - cryptographic secrets such as passwords, certificates and authentication keys and that it was reaching out to them "to assist in taking mitigating measures."
Cloud-computing company Hewlett Packard Enterprise disclosed on Jan. 24 that it, too, was an SVR hacking victim and that it had been informed of the breach - by whom it would not say - two weeks earlier, coinciding with Microsoft's discovery it had been hacked. |
iOS 17.4, Out Today, Brings Transcripts to Apple Podcasts - [briefly] 11:07 AM EST - Mar,09 2024 - post a comment iOS version 17.4 is officially available for iPhones starting today. One major new feature of the update is podcast transcripts in the Apple Podcasts app. The feature improves accessibility and gives users a new option in other scenarios where listening to audio may be difficult. Text stays in sync with audio, highlighting the current word. Crucially, it also includes a search feature, which lets you search for any word or phrase and tap it jump to that part of the podcast. Starting today, transcripts are available for English-, French-, Spanish-, and German-language podcasts with iOS 17.4. Transcripts will automatically be available for new episodes shortly after episodes are published; previously released episodes will be transcribed over time. |
Microsoft Kills Android-on-Windows - [mobile] 11:06 AM EST - Mar,09 2024 - post a comment Microsoft is removing Android app compatibility from Windows. The Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) was a feature of Windows 11 that enabled Android apps to run on PCs. A limited selection of Android apps were available primarily via the Amazon Appstore. Users who have already downloaded the Appstore and Android apps can continue using (and updating) apps for one year. However the Amazon Appstore is no longer available to download for users who don't already have it installed, and Amazon is no longer accepting new apps for it. |

Will it survive the onslaught of our well known infamous ransomware like Wannacry, Petya, Ryuk, Darkside etc?
Ed.note: The only time you should have Windows Defender as your only antivirus is while you download a reliable antivirus that actually protects you, personally I use ESET which works much better than Windows Defender. |

World's Fastest Camera Drone Vs F1 Car (ft. Max Verstappen) - [off-topic] 07:47 AM EST - Mar,01 2024 - post a comment This is Formula 1 like you've never seen it before. The @dutchdronegods follow Max Verstappen's brand new @redbullracing RB20 F1 car for a full lap of Silverstone's Grand Prix Circuit. The world first uninterrupted FPV one shot was captured by a manually piloted custom built drone, designed specifically for the challenge of keeping up with the car at speeds of over 300kph.
It took Red Bull and the Dutch Drone Gods over a year to create a drone that can accelerate two times faster than an F1 car, reaching 300 km/h in just 4 seconds with a top speed of over 350 km/h. The development was accelerated by access to know-how and processes of Red Bull Advanced Technologies, a high-performance engineering arm of Oracle Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team and trialled behind the RB8 and RB19 cars driven by @liamlawson30 and David Coulthard.

NVIDIA Geforce 551.61 WHQL Driver released - [briefly] 04:38 AM EST - Feb,23 2024 - post a comment NVIDIA has released the latest version of GeForce drivers. While the actual driver package of the new GeForce 551.61 is WHQL, it also includes a beta version of the NVIDIA App. This is NVIDIA's take on a modern control panel application that combines functionality of the classic NVIDIA Control Panel that hasn't quite changed in 20+ years; and the GeForce Experience application that not everyone likes to have installed. The new NVIDIA App has a lot in common with the AMD Radeon Software application, in that you can configure your displays, monitor and tune your GPU, as well as manage and optimize your installed games. The app also helps gather and present software update options spanning both the main drivers and application profiles for DLSS and other technologies. Most importantly, the NVIDIA App provides a comprehensive performance overlay suite. We will be doing an article detailing the NVIDIA App before the weekend.
NVIDIA is also debuting RTX HDR, a technology that adds HDR capability to games that otherwise lack it. It does so by utilizing Tensor cores and an AI model that attempts to add HDR to SDR content. The driver adds optimization and optimal settings for Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Nightingale, Pacific Drive, and Skull and Bones. A stability issue with Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege running using the Vulkan API has been fixed. Among the general issues fixed concern incorrect tone mapping for RTX Video HDR; poor SDR video playback quality in Chromium-based web-browsers with Windows HDR setting enabled; filter settings not carrying over with NVIDIA Freestyle; and a couple of bugs with Adobe Substance 3D.

Tear-Down of Arctic's Liquid Freezer III CPU Cooler & Disassembly - [hardware] 11:56 AM EST - Feb,21 2024 - post a comment The Arctic Liquid Freezer III is the new best liquid cooler for CPUs that we've tested, and now we're tearing it down to learn about how it's assembled and what the differences are versus the original Liquid Freezer II. The Liquid Freezer III is a value-focused, high-performance liquid cooler that has a drastically different pump block (with separable VRM fan unit), and the coldplate itself underwent changes for this new version -- something we weren't expecting. The ability to repair and disassembly the Liquid Freezer 3 should make it easier to maintain long-term.

The New Best: Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360 & 280 CPU Cooler Review - [hardware] 12:53 PM EST - Feb,20 2024 - post a comment Arctic is launching the new Liquid Freezer III cooler, which immediately set forth to take the top rank as the best noise-normalized CPU cooler in our benchmarks. The Liquid Freezer II established itself as the best liquid cooler in our tests many years ago. In the time since, it's been dethroned on some technicalities at times, but often finds its way back to the top of rankings through value and noise-to-thermal efficiency. We're benchmarking and reviewing the new Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360 and A-RGB 280 today vs. the Lian Li Trinity Performance, the DeepCool Mystique, other AIOs, and air coolers like the Thermalright Peerless Assassin.

Intel Arc 2024 Revisit & Benchmarks (A750, A770, A580, A380 Updated GPU Tests) - [briefly] 03:32 AM EST - Feb,19 2024 - post a comment A few months ago, we revisited Intel's user-facing drivers (including Arc Control) to see how they'd improved over one year of patches. Now, we're benchmarking the Intel Arc lineup in more depth to see how they compete with NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards in 2024. These Intel Arc GPU benchmarks include the A770, A750, A580, and A380 video cards vs. the RTX 4060, RX 6600 and 6600 XT, RX 7600, 7600 XT, and more. We're seeking to answer whether Intel Arc is any good (yet), and specifically, how it competes in the value side of the market with AMD. Large parts of this video will be simple discussion about the interesting way this battle is playing out: Namely, with AMD and Intel fighting over the modern "low end" while NVIDIA leaves it relatively untouched with new parts.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 - NOT AGAIN - [mobile] 04:23 PM EST - Feb,18 2024 - post a comment Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 will retain the same camera system as its predecessor. A few days back, rumors were floating around that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 might snag the S24 Ultra's main camera. But anyone who's into tech knew that sounded too good to be true. Also, one of the batteries of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has been leaked and it shows that just like the S24, the Z Fold 6 will also feature a battery that's placed inside an adhesive pouch with a pull tab, which will make it easier to replace the battery if you ever need to.
