This MIGHT be the best NAS on the market - [hardware] 03:59 PM EDT - Mar,31 2024 - post a comment Great review. One thing I noted from another reviewer's video is that you can get the NAS into the UEFI setup by SSHing in and mounting the EFI partition of the preinstalled UGOS SSD, and then rename the EFI folder to something else so the UEFI BIOS doesn't detect it as a bootable drive. Once you reboot you'll automatically be dropped into the setup or any other bootable device you have attached. This seems to resolve the ambiguity in UGREEN's statement about installing a different OS since you don't need to disassemble the NAS and break the warranty sticker, and it's completely reversible if you don't wipe the UGOS SSD.

Entire Case Company Built on Literal Theft - [hardware] 04:22 PM EDT - Mar,30 2024 - post a comment Today we're "reviewing" the GameMAX "Hype," which DEFINITELY ISN'T inspired by a Hyte Y60. The Hype case is anywhere from $100 to $200, depending on where and when you look, and has poorly copied nearly every aspect of the Hyte Y60. We haven't seen a ripoff this egregious previously, and that's because even the product page has literal copied & pasted text from real Hyte's product pages. This is part of our new case testing methodology that we debuted for 2024.

Red Hat warns of backdoor in XZ tools used by most Linux distros - [security] 06:23 AM EDT - Mar,30 2024 - post a comment Today, Red Hat warned users to immediately stop using systems running Fedora development and experimental versions because of a backdoor found in the latest XZ Utils data compression tools and libraries.
"PLEASE IMMEDIATELY STOP USAGE OF ANY FEDORA 41 OR FEDORA RAWHIDE INSTANCES for work or personal activity," Red Hat warned on Friday.
"No versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) are affected. We have reports and evidence of the injections successfully building in xz 5.6.x versions built for Debian unstable (Sid). Other distributions may also be affected."
Debian's security team also issued an advisory warning users about the issue. The advisory says that no stable Debian versions are using the compromised packages and that XZ has been reverted to the upstream 5.4.5 code on affected Debian testing, unstable, and experimental distributions.
Microsoft software engineer Andres Freund discovered the security issue while investigating slow SSH logins on a Linux box running Debian Sid (the rolling development version of the Debian distro).
However, he has not found the exact purpose of the malicious code added to XZ versions 5.6.0 and 5.6.1.
"I have not yet analyzed precisely what is being checked for in the injected code, to allow unauthorized access. Since this is running in a pre-authentication context, it seems likely to allow some form of access or other form of remote code execution," Freund said.
"Initially starting sshd outside of systemd did not show the slowdown, despite the backdoor briefly getting invoked. This appears to be part of some countermeasures to make analysis harder."

Whatever Happened To Acer? - [briefly] 05:13 AM EDT - Mar,29 2024 - post a comment Remember Acer? Back in the 2000s, Acer was the 2nd largest PC maker in the world only beaten out by HP. Their affordable computers were a hit with the oversaturated consumer PC market who were fed up with constantly replacing their computers. But, things have vastly changed since then. Acer has fallen from the 2nd largest PC maker in the world to not even being in the top 5 PC makers. Accordingly, Acer's market cap also crumbled from $8 billion to just $1 billion. What happened? Well, the demands of the consumer PC industry evolved and Acer simply didn't keep up. Moving into the 2010s, progress in computing heavily slowed, at least in terms of what was relevant for consumers. As such, people were able to keep their computers for longer periods and invest in a better PC the next time they bought. This video explains the rapid rise and fall of Acer and what happened to the once-dominant company.

Yes, this was a Bad Idea (Emergency Wall-Mounted PC Build) - [briefly] 03:27 AM EDT - Mar,27 2024 - post a comment It was only supposed to be temporary, but after a very short time I decided (with much encouragement from you guys) that my propped-up PC on the shelf I recently installed needed a better solution. Wall-mounting a PC was a challenge but it was helped along by the Thermaltake Core P3 TG Pro case, which is VESA mounting bracket compatible. I still had to break out the angle grinder though! Here's how I wall-mounted my main gaming, editing and video capture PC.

When you Accidentally Compromise every CPU on Earth - [security] 03:20 AM EDT - Mar,26 2024 - post a comment In this video, we take a deep dive into Spectre and Meltdown, two of the most dangerous and widespread transient execution CPU vulnerabilities, discovered by researchers at Google Project Zero. These vulnerabilities allow a rogue process to read from unauthorized memory on nearly every device in the world. What makes these bugs particularly dangerous is that they don't behave like any software bug we've seen before, as they don't rely on exploiting any fundamental weakness or flaws in any code. These vulnerabilities are baked into the very essence of modern CPU technology, attacking underlying CPU micro-architectures.

US Justice Dept. Sues Apple for Monopolistic Behavior in Smartphones - [crime-law] 04:39 PM EDT - Mar,24 2024 - post a comment The US Justice Department, joined by 16 other attorneys general, today filed a civil antitrust lawsuit against Apple for illegal monopolization of smartphone markets. The move comes after the EU forced Apple to change the way it operates in Europe, for similar reasons. Specifically, the Justice Dept. claims several specific offenses:
- Disrupting the growth of "super apps" with broad functionality that would make it easier to switch platforms.
- Suppressing streaming game apps and certain other cloud-based applications.
- Making cross-platform messaging worse, less innovative, and less secure to create platform lock-in.
- Limiting the functionality of smartwatches when used with other platforms.
- Limiting third-party apps from offering tap-to-pay functionality.
The complaint further alleges that Apple's illegal conduct also extends to web browsers, video communication, news subscriptions, entertainment, automotive services, advertising, location services, and more. The Justice Department is "seeking equitable relief on behalf of the American public to redress Apple's long-running, pervasive anticompetitive conduct." |
NVIDIA Is On a Different Planet - [hardware] 05:15 AM EDT - Mar,22 2024 - post a comment NVIDIA had a lot of announcements this week between the Blackwell GPUs (which will presumably come to the RTX 5090, 5080, and others), its NIMs, the humanoid and other robotics Project GR00T, NVLink Switch advancements, and more. But in addition to covering those stories and some of the surface-level technicals that have been released so far, we're also talking about some of the absurdity of media coverage. This piece is a mix of news reporting on NVIDIA's GTC 2024 keynote and of commentary and opinions on the state of the industry, NVIDIA's scary position, and what AMD and Intel are left to do. Despite our focus in gaming, much of this technology eventually works its way into consumer parts (and it's just fun to learn about).

Expands Snapdragon 8 Series to Cover More Price Points - [hardware] 04:10 AM EDT - Mar,18 2024 - post a comment Qualcomm has revealed the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 Mobile Platform, an expansion of the 8 series to a slightly more affordable price point. Traditionally, the 8 series (like the new 8 Gen 3) powered top-end "flagship" phones, and the 7 series chips powered "affordable flagship" phones one tier below that. The "s" designator in 8s represents an expansion of the Snapdragon naming scheme to create a new sub-tier between "8" and "7" or "7+". The specs of the new Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 are effectively a blend of the current 8 Gen 3 and last year's 8 Gen 2. Qualcomm says that AI and camera are two areas where Qualcomm hasn't compromised, bringing over nearly the full capabilities of the 8 Gen 3. This includes the ability to perform generative AI and run multi-modal AI models with up to 10 billion parameters, all on-device. The 8s Gen 3 borrows several other features from full 8 Gen 3, including Arm Cortex-X4 architecture for the prime CPU core, support for up to 24 GB of RAM, USB version 3.1 Gen 2, and Bluetooth 5.4. Other specs are similar to last year's 8 Gen 2, such as an X70 modem (instead of X75) and 4200 MHz maximum RAM speed (instead of 4800). One area that puts it below both the 8 Gen 2 and 8 Gen 3 is video capture, which tops out at 4K instead of 8K. Qualcomm expects the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 to appear in phones launching globally, and soon (in a few months or even weeks.) Read on for a more detailed comparison between the 8 Gen 2, 8s Gen 3, and 8 Gen 3. |
Asus Goes Big with Zenfone 11 Ultra - [mobile] 03:46 PM EDT - Mar,14 2024 - post a comment Asus has revealed its latest global flagship phone: the Zenfone 11 Ultra. This year's model abandons the compact form factor that was a hallmark of the Zenfone series in recent years; the 11 Ultra has a 6.78" FHD+ AMOLED display, whereas last year's model was just 5.9". This change in strategy allows Asus to all but combine its ordinary and gaming lineups; the Zenfone 11 Ultra is basically the same phone as the ROG Phone 8, with only a different outer design. The 11 Ultra has all of the top-end specs expected of a flagship phone in 2024. Unusually, it also includes a 3.5mm headset jack, which supports Hi-res Audio and Dirac Virtuo. The US model has very good support for T-Mobile and AT&T 5G and 4G networks. It will be available in four colors: black, gray, blue, and sand. For $900 unlocked, it comes with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Pre-orders start today. From now until April 14, 2024, Asus is offering a free pair of ROG Cetra True Wireless earbuds worth $100. Read on for more specs.

House Passes Bill to Force Sale of TikTok - [crime-law] 03:45 PM EDT - Mar,14 2024 - post a comment The US House of Representatives has passed a bill that would force Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok within six months or face a complete ban on the app in the US. It would also grant the President the power to include other foreign-owned apps in the future. This specific bill (H.R. 7521, or the "Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act") moved quickly from proposal to vote, and received broad bipartisan support, passing 352 - 65. President Biden has indicated he supports the measure and would sign it. The bill's prospects in the Senate are unclear, however. Supporters claim TikTok remaining under Chinese ownership poses a national security threat. Chinese companies can be forced to turn over information to the Chinese government at any time. The EFF and civil rights groups oppose this bill, arguing that it would be both ineffective and unconstitutional. They also argue that only tighter regulation of how personal data can be collected and handled - by all companies and apps - can achieve the goal of protecting the personal data of US persons from falling into the wrong hands. |
Motorola Brings More Affordable 5G Phones to its 2024 Lineup - [mobile] 03:44 PM EDT - Mar,14 2024 - post a comment Motorola has announced the 2024 editions of the moto g 5G and moto g power 5G, priced at $200 and $300, respectively (MSRP, unlocked). Both phones offer 5G, a vegan leather finish on the back, 120 Hz display refresh, 50 megapixel main camera, 5,000 mAh battery, 128 GB storage (expandable), NFC, fingerprint reader (on the side), and a headset jack. For the moto g 5G, NFC is a key addition compared to last year's version. For the extra $100, upgrades on the moto g power 5G (compared to the moto g 5G) include a sharper display (FHD+ instead of HD+), double the RAM (8 GB instead of 4), better front camera (16 megapixel instead of 8), an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera (instead of 2-megapixel macro), faster charging (30-watt instead of 18), and wireless charging. Compared to last year's moto g power 5G, improvements include more RAM, the wide-angle camera, NFC, wireless charging, and faster wired charging. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile will all offer both phones. The moto g 5G (2024) will come to T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile first, on March 21st. Boost, Consumer Cellular, Cricket, TracFone, US Cellular, Xfinity, Google Fi, Optimum, Cox, Straight Talk, Total by Verizon, Simple Mobile, Walmart Family Mobile, and Visible will also offer it. The moto g power 5G (2024) will launch with Cricket on March 22nd, and later with Metro, US Cellular, Straight Talk, Total by Verizon, Walmart Family Mobile, and Visible as well. Motorola's g series for 2024 also includes the already-announced, 4G-only moto g play (2024), which retails for $150. |
The Most Stunning All SSD NAS Ever? Inside QNAP's All-SSD Masterpieces! - [hardware] 05:47 PM EDT - Mar,11 2024 - post a comment When it comes to packaged NAS hardware, QNAP is leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. These two examples help prove the point, the TS-h1290FX 12-bay NVMe NAS and the TBS-h574TX 5-bay SSD NAS are some of the coolest NAS designs in the market.
The 12-bay system even has a ton of power, with the AMD EPYC CPU, plenty of DRAM and 25GbE on the back end. These units even support GPUs, which is pretty slick - we'll show this NAS running AI workloads in an upcoming article and video.
The 574TX is innovating thanks to its support for E1.S enterprise SSDs. While this is less a performance story with 10GbE and Thunderbolt 4 as the primary data access paths, the system design is amazing in its own right.
Sure, you can build your own NAS on server hardware and if you're a homelabber or have the right support in place, that's a great option. But for small businesses or system integrators who need easy to manage systems in the field these are amazing units.
