iOS 17.5 Out Now with Cross-Platform Unwanted Tracking Protection - [security]
05:20 PM EDT - May,13 2024 - post a comment

Apple has released the final version of iOS 17.5 to the public. The most notable new feature is support for the new Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers cross-platform specification. This anti-stalking technology will let you know if a Bluetooth tracking device is moving with you that is not yours. iOS previously had this feature for its own AirTags, but now it will work with trackers designed for Google's ecosystem as well. iOS 17.5 also brings a number of important security fixes, so most iPhone users should upgrade as soon as possible. iPhone users can update to 17.5 by going to Settings, General, Software Update, and choosing "Update Now".

Apple is close to deal with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT integration to iOS 18 - [briefly]
10:02 AM EDT - May,11 2024 - post a comment

Apple aims to improve iPhone's AI capabilities with iOS 18. To achieve this, the company is in talks with OpenAI and Google. Recently, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claimed that Apple is close to an agreement with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to the iPhone. According to Mark Gurman, Apple is very close to finalizing an agreement with OpenAI. While how ChatGPT would be implemented remains unclear, this deal would enable Apple to integrate AI features into iOS 18. Sources close to Apple say that negotiations with OpenAI are progressing well. Apple wanted to reach an agreement with other artificial intelligence companies during this process. Most importantly, according to Bloomberg, there are talks with Google about licensing the Gemini chatbot. However, it has not reached an agreement so far. Apple's CEO Tim Cook has previously said that he personally uses ChatGPT. However, he emphasized that some concerns need to be addressed before implementing such technologies into Apple's ecosystem. Meanwhile, recent rumors are surfacing that iOS 18 will include AI transcription and summarization. This feature will see the primary benefit within Notes and Voice Memos. The feature will be in real-time and system-wide within iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15. The introduction of AI power into Apple's ecosystem has been a matter of 'when' rather than 'if' given the progress that has been made by its competitors, such as Microsoft with Copilot and Google with Gemini. Apple's annual WWDC, scheduled for June 2024, is anticipated to be the stage for unveiling these new AI features. Apple will share more information about WWDC 24 in the coming weeks. On the other hand, OpenAI did announce it will be streaming some announcements on May 13 related to ChatGPT and GPT-4 updates. However, Sam Altman later posted a message on his X account that stated a search engine would not be among those announcements, nor would it be something related to GPT-5.

Google Pixel 8a is a Modest Update to the 7a - [mobile]
10:37 AM EDT - May,09 2024 - post a comment

Google has announced the Pixel 8a, this year's more-affordable Pixel model. It offers several small hardware improvements over last year's 7a, and new AI software features, but is otherwise quite similar to the 7a. The design has more rounded corners. The "Actua" display is 40% brighter and the refresh rate gets a bump from 90 to 120 Hz. There's also a new 256 GB storage option. An upgrade from a Google Tensor G2 processor to the newer G3 chip enables new software features like Best Take for group photos, Magic Editor for photos, and Audio Magic Eraser for video. Circle To Search is also available, and Gemeni AI can summarize emails. Pixel 8a also makes official the controversial Audio Emoji feature revealed last week. The battery is also slightly larger at 4,492 mAh vs. 4,385 mAh. Other features and specs remain the same as the 7a, including FHD+ display, 64 megapixel main camera, 13 megapixel wide camera, 8 GB RAM, storage starting at 128 GB, IP67 water resistance, 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, 18W fast charging, and wireless charging. The launch price is also unchanged at $499. As before, a version with mmWave 5G is available for Verizon but priced a little higher, at $550. The Google Pixel 8a is available for pre-order today, shipping May 14th. It's available in four colors at launch: Porcelain (off-white), Obsidian (black), Bay (blue), and a limited-edition Aloe (mint green).

TikTok Sues to Stop 'Forced Shutdown' in US - [crime-law]
10:34 AM EDT - May,09 2024 - post a comment

TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance have filed suit against the US government to challenge the constitutionality of a recently-signed law that the companies say will "force a shutdown of TikTok". The law technically gives the companies the option of selling or spinning off TikTok so it is no longer Chinese-owned. However ByteDance says this "is simply not possible: not commercially, not technologically, not legally." This is in part because the Chinese government "has made clear that it would not permit a divestment of the recommendation engine that is a key to the success of TikTok in the United States." The lawsuit says the law runs afoul of First Amendment free speech protections. The law was created over concerns that TikTok holds a large volume of personal data on US citizens, and Chinese companies must cooperate with the Chinese government if it requests access to such data.

We Made the Perfect CPU Cooler | Intel vs. AMD Curvature & Coldplate Engineering - [hardware]
01:39 PM EDT - May,06 2024 - post a comment

This video attempts to make the best CPU cooler coldplate for Intel LGA1700 (such as 14th Gen) and the best CPU cooler for AMD AM4 and AMD AM5. We're focusing our efforts entirely on coldplate shape today to isolate variables -- maybe we can bin heatpipes in the future. This uses a 3D laser scanner to evaluate the surface curvature of an Intel and AMD IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) when clamped under the ILM (Independent Loading Mechanism) force for the CPU socket. It's an engineering experiment for fun with some science mixed in, but maybe this can help guide CPU cooler design in the future. For this testing, we're using the Scythe FUMA 3 air coolers (successor to the famous FUMA 2). We were originally inspired to do this at Computex last year, where we met with Scythe to discuss the possibilities of a better coldplate. Arctic's Liquid Freezer III this year brought the topic up again, and now it's back.

Better Computer Fan - Sometimes: Cross-Flow Meshless AIO Case Benchmarks & Review - [hardware]
06:37 PM EDT - Apr,30 2024 - post a comment

Consider grabbing one of our 3D metal emblem pint glasses to go with it: https://store.gamersnexus.net/product... This video is exciting for us: We put some heavy work into new educational animations to explain abstract or challenging topics, like airflow through a cross-flow fan vs. axial vs. blower. The Meshless AIO mini-ITX case is a new computer case on the market with a unique thermal solution, using a cross-flow cylindrical fan rather than traditional computer fans. This can be the best fan for the job when in a cramped space, but requires the entire solution to be built ground-up around the fan. This video will go in-depth with airflow, thermals and temperature testing results, and will feature an animation to educate on how these bizarre (and relatively new, at just 131 years old) fans work. This content also provides a detailed review of the SFF (Small Form Factor) Meshless AIO case.

This video required coordination with investigators, business analysts, sources and whistleblowers, former EK staff and current suppliers, and more. We dive deep into what we think are the corrupted ethics and nepotism of the world's largest PC water cooling manufacturer, EK WB, as we investigate its finances, issues with payment, its past breaches of contract where it lost court battles, and demand letters that are intimidating with references of jail time. This video cost us over $40,000 to make between all the research, hired firms, investigators, and analysts, and our own costs internally.

Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 will soon let you create TAR and 7Z archives - [briefly]
07:14 AM EDT - Apr,27 2024 - post a comment

Did you know that recent Windows 11 versions let you open TAR, 7Z, RAR, and more archive types without downloading third-party apps? Moreover, the upcoming Windows 11 version 24H2 will make it possible to compress files to 7Z and TAR, specify compression ratio, and more. However, you do not have to wait half a year to get your hands on that feature. Improved archive support is coming to Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2. PhantomOfEarth noticed that the latest Windows 11 Beta build contains a feature ID that lets you enable TAR and 7Z compression in File Explorer. Once enabled, you can right-click a selection of files, click "Compress to," and select the format you want. Alternatively, you can click "More options" to open a wizard with additional features, such as compression method or level. Microsoft has not announced the archive support improvements for the Beta Channel yet, not to mention Stable. However, recent updates showed that new features do not stay long in the Beta Channel, and they quickly move to Stable releases.

President Biden signs TikTok bill into law - [briefly]
06:45 PM EDT - Apr,24 2024 - post a comment

After being voted for approval by the US House of Representatives to pass it on Saturday, followed by Tuesday's vote to pass it in the US Senate, the bill that could cause TikTok to be banned completely in the United States was signed into law today by US President Joe Biden. CNBC reports that the bill signing was part of a package that mostly concentrated on approving funding for military aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Under the terms of the law, TikTok's China-based parent company ByteDance must sell off its interest in the popular social network 270 days from today. Biden does have the option of approving a 90-day extension of that deadline if the Biden Administration feels a deal to sell TikTok is close to happening. However, if such a deal is not reached by either the current deadline or the extension, the US government could make a decision to ban the TikTok app from US app stores. Lawmakers on both the Republican and Democratic sides have been stating for years that ByteDance could take personal info from TikTok and sell it to the Chinese government. ByteDance has repeatedly denied these claims, and the government has offered little to no evidence that ByteDance would make such a move.
In a post on the official TikTok Policy X (formerly Twitter) account, the company has already stated it will fight this law in court and it believes "the facts and the law are clearly on our side, and we will ultimately prevail."

Researchers have unlocked the 'Holy Grail' of memory technology - [technology]
04:21 PM EDT - Apr,24 2024 - post a comment

Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in South Korea have developed a new type of phase change memory that isn't subject to the shortcoming of earlier iterations.
Phase change memory, or PCM for short, works by shifting between two physical states: crystallized (with low resistance) and amorphous (with high resistance). Think of it as an optimal blend of DRAM and NAND flash.

DRAM is speedy but volatile, meaning the data stored in it disappears when power is cut (like when you turn off your computer). NAND flash memory, like what is used in SSDs, can retain data even when power is pulled but is significantly slower than DRAM. PCM is both fast and non-volatile, but has traditionally been expensive to manufacture and is power hungry (heat is needed to melt the phase change material into an amorphous state, which hampers energy efficiency).

Earlier efforts to address high power consumption focused on reducing the physical size of an entire device through cutting-edge lithography techniques. Improvements were nominal, and the increased cost and complexity involved in fabricating on smaller tech was not justifiable.

Professor Shinhyun Choi and team devised a method to shrink only the components directly involved in the phase change process to create a phase-changeable nano filament. The novel approach cut power consumption by 15 times compared to traditional phase change memory made using expensive lithography tools, and is also far less expensive to manufacture.

The new phase change memory retains many characteristics of traditional memory such as fast speed, a large on / off ratio, small variations, and multi-level memory properties.

Choi said they expect the results of their study to become the foundation of future electronic engineering, and could benefit applications including high density 3D vertical memory, neuromorphic computing systems, edge processors, and in-memory computing systems.
