Less design changes, more "AI", a Ryzen 8000 series CPU, competitors like the Zephyrus G14 catching up performance updates that go nowhere. But, since they were so far ahead, this still might mean the Razer Blade 14 is one of the best 14" gaming laptops on the planet....or....

A new video shows AirPower prototype charging an Apple Watch - [gadgets] 05:16 PM EDT - Apr,08 2024 - post a comment Apple announced its wireless charging mat AirPower in full glory in 2017. However, the device couldn't see the daylight due to technical limitations. Now, a video shared by Apple Demo on X (formerly Twitter) shows a prototype AirPower charging mat powering an Apple Watch. The Greatest GPU of All Time: NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti & GTX 1080 2024 Revisit & History - [hardware] 02:05 PM EDT - Apr,06 2024 - post a comment The NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti is the Greatest GPU of All Time thanks to a mix of value, performance, and timing on a market teeming with excellent choices. It was an era when the AMD RX 580 was largely competing in the mid-range with the GTX 1060, Vega hadn't yet launched, and Intel Arc didn't even exist as a thought in anyone's mind. In this 2024 revisit & benchmark of the GTX 1080 Ti & GTX 1080 (non-Ti), we're looking at performance today and how it compares to modern graphics cards. Upgrades on the NVIDIA side might include the RTX 4070 Ti Super or RTX 4070 Super if spending less, or maybe an RTX 4080 Super for more; on the AMD side, that is more likely an RX 7900 XT or RX 7900 XTX, or possibly the "new" GRE (with its global launch). The GTX 1080 Ti and 1080 Pascal architecture GPUs can't reasonably handle real-time ray tracing, so obviously those charts are absent. A modern card is effectively infinitely better. But for rasterization, they still hang in there.

This MIGHT be the best NAS on the market - [hardware] 03:59 PM EDT - Mar,31 2024 - post a comment Great review. One thing I noted from another reviewer's video is that you can get the NAS into the UEFI setup by SSHing in and mounting the EFI partition of the preinstalled UGOS SSD, and then rename the EFI folder to something else so the UEFI BIOS doesn't detect it as a bootable drive. Once you reboot you'll automatically be dropped into the setup or any other bootable device you have attached. This seems to resolve the ambiguity in UGREEN's statement about installing a different OS since you don't need to disassemble the NAS and break the warranty sticker, and it's completely reversible if you don't wipe the UGOS SSD.

Entire Case Company Built on Literal Theft - [hardware] 04:22 PM EDT - Mar,30 2024 - post a comment Today we're "reviewing" the GameMAX "Hype," which DEFINITELY ISN'T inspired by a Hyte Y60. The Hype case is anywhere from $100 to $200, depending on where and when you look, and has poorly copied nearly every aspect of the Hyte Y60. We haven't seen a ripoff this egregious previously, and that's because even the product page has literal copied & pasted text from real Hyte's product pages. This is part of our new case testing methodology that we debuted for 2024.

Red Hat warns of backdoor in XZ tools used by most Linux distros - [security] 06:23 AM EDT - Mar,30 2024 - post a comment Today, Red Hat warned users to immediately stop using systems running Fedora development and experimental versions because of a backdoor found in the latest XZ Utils data compression tools and libraries.
"PLEASE IMMEDIATELY STOP USAGE OF ANY FEDORA 41 OR FEDORA RAWHIDE INSTANCES for work or personal activity," Red Hat warned on Friday.
"No versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) are affected. We have reports and evidence of the injections successfully building in xz 5.6.x versions built for Debian unstable (Sid). Other distributions may also be affected."
Debian's security team also issued an advisory warning users about the issue. The advisory says that no stable Debian versions are using the compromised packages and that XZ has been reverted to the upstream 5.4.5 code on affected Debian testing, unstable, and experimental distributions.
Microsoft software engineer Andres Freund discovered the security issue while investigating slow SSH logins on a Linux box running Debian Sid (the rolling development version of the Debian distro).
However, he has not found the exact purpose of the malicious code added to XZ versions 5.6.0 and 5.6.1.
"I have not yet analyzed precisely what is being checked for in the injected code, to allow unauthorized access. Since this is running in a pre-authentication context, it seems likely to allow some form of access or other form of remote code execution," Freund said.
"Initially starting sshd outside of systemd did not show the slowdown, despite the backdoor briefly getting invoked. This appears to be part of some countermeasures to make analysis harder."

Whatever Happened To Acer? - [briefly] 05:13 AM EDT - Mar,29 2024 - post a comment Remember Acer? Back in the 2000s, Acer was the 2nd largest PC maker in the world only beaten out by HP. Their affordable computers were a hit with the oversaturated consumer PC market who were fed up with constantly replacing their computers. But, things have vastly changed since then. Acer has fallen from the 2nd largest PC maker in the world to not even being in the top 5 PC makers. Accordingly, Acer's market cap also crumbled from $8 billion to just $1 billion. What happened? Well, the demands of the consumer PC industry evolved and Acer simply didn't keep up. Moving into the 2010s, progress in computing heavily slowed, at least in terms of what was relevant for consumers. As such, people were able to keep their computers for longer periods and invest in a better PC the next time they bought. This video explains the rapid rise and fall of Acer and what happened to the once-dominant company.

Yes, this was a Bad Idea (Emergency Wall-Mounted PC Build) - [briefly] 03:27 AM EDT - Mar,27 2024 - post a comment It was only supposed to be temporary, but after a very short time I decided (with much encouragement from you guys) that my propped-up PC on the shelf I recently installed needed a better solution. Wall-mounting a PC was a challenge but it was helped along by the Thermaltake Core P3 TG Pro case, which is VESA mounting bracket compatible. I still had to break out the angle grinder though! Here's how I wall-mounted my main gaming, editing and video capture PC.

When you Accidentally Compromise every CPU on Earth - [security] 03:20 AM EDT - Mar,26 2024 - post a comment In this video, we take a deep dive into Spectre and Meltdown, two of the most dangerous and widespread transient execution CPU vulnerabilities, discovered by researchers at Google Project Zero. These vulnerabilities allow a rogue process to read from unauthorized memory on nearly every device in the world. What makes these bugs particularly dangerous is that they don't behave like any software bug we've seen before, as they don't rely on exploiting any fundamental weakness or flaws in any code. These vulnerabilities are baked into the very essence of modern CPU technology, attacking underlying CPU micro-architectures.
