Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is pushing the limits... (Durability Test) - [mobile] 03:22 AM EDT - Aug,14 2024 - post a comment Today we durability test the new Pixel 9 Pro XL. Get a screen protector before you need one: https://www.dbrand.com/pixel-9-series The google pixel 9 XL has quite possibly the worlds largest camera bump. Its not even a bump at this point - its a plateau. But... the rest of the flat glass design makes up for the giganticness of the camera units. Plus... bigger cameras usually mean better pictures. But Ill let other reviewers handle the software side of new Pixel phones. We are here to test the durability of the Pixel 9 pro XL to see if it can really handle 7 years worth of use.

Google's Pixel Pro Phone now Comes in Two Sizes - [mobile] 03:18 AM EDT - Aug,14 2024 - post a comment Google has officially revealed full details of its newest flagship phone lineup: the Pixel 9 series. For the first time, Google is offering the higher-end "Pro" model in two sizes: regular, with a 6.3-inch display, and "XL", with a 6.8-inch display. The larger model also has a larger battery and faster wired charging (37W vs. 27W), but specs and features are otherwise identical between the two Pro models. All of the new Pixel 9 models have a "industry-leading" AI performance thanks to a new Google Tensor G4 chip and at least 12 GB of RAM. All Pixel 9 models include satellite radios, for a new "Satellite SOS" feature. Similar to Apple's version of this feature, it lets you contact emergency responders and share your location via satellite, and the service is free for two years. Google also claims the Pixel 9 is twice as durable, has a 35% brighter display, and gets 20% better battery life when active, compared to the Pixel 8. The ultra-wide camera also gets a boost to 48 megapixel, and the front camera has been upgraded with auto-focus. Google has also switched from optical to ultrasonic in-display fingerprint readers, which it says are 50% faster. A revamped panorama mode adds HDR and Night Sight. All Pixel 9 series come with seven years of full OS updates. The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL add a 48-megapixel 5x telephoto camera, which Google claims can zoom up to 20x for video with no loss of quality. They have the same 50 megapixel main camera and 48 megapixel wide camera as the Pixel 9, but the auto-focus selfie camera gets a boost to 42 megapixel. The Pro models also come with more RAM (16 GB), UWB, and a free one-year subscription to Gemini Advanced, including access to the Gemini Live conversational assistant. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold carries over most of the specs and features of the Pixel 9 Pro while adding an 8-inch tablet display inside. The cameras get a bit of a downgrade, though, with the wide, 5x tele, and selfie cameras clocking in at just over 10 megapixel each. The Pixel 9 starts at $799, the Pixel 9 Pro starts at $999, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL starts at $1,099. All three come with just 128 GB of storage. 256 GB is available for $100 extra; the Pro models are also available with 512 GB or 1 TB. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold starts at $1,799 (with 256 GB storage). Pre-orders run through August 21st, and include free double storage with some carriers (including AT&T, excluding the Fold). The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL ship August 22, while the smaller Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold ship later, starting Sept. 4.

Google Brings New AI Apps to Pixel Phones - [briefly] 03:17 AM EDT - Aug,14 2024 - post a comment Google has announced several completely new apps for Pixel phones, some powered by Google Gemini AI. The most basic is a Pixel Weather app. A new Call Notes feature transcribes phone calls to make phone conversations searchable via AI. (Call Notes runs completely on-device for privacy, and both parties are notified when it's enabled.) A new Pixel Screenshots app does something similar, letting you search all of your screenshots using AI. A new Pixel Studio app is dedicated to visual generative AI, letting you create and tweak images using text prompts. It can create styled or realistic images (unlike Apple's generative AI) and lets you add text and stickers. Finally, Gemini Live is a new, conversational version of Google's Gemini multi-modal AI. It requires a paid subscription to Gemini Advanced, but a free year is included with the new Pixel 9 series. |
Google Upgrades its Watch and Buds - [gadgets] 03:17 AM EDT - Aug,14 2024 - post a comment Google has announced the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2. The Pixel Watch 3 comes in two sizes: 41mm and a new, larger 45mm diameter. Upgrades in this year's model include a 2x brighter display (now up to 2000 nits), offline Google Maps, and a Recorder app. Enhanced Fitbit health features include a more interactive running coach, Workout Builder, and a new "readiness" score to evaluate workout recovery. Improved Google ecosystem integration includes live streaming video from Nest doorbells and cameras, remote camera viewfinder and control for Pixel phones, and Google TV remote control. In some regions — starting with the UK and Europe — a new Loss of Pulse detection feature can automatically notify emergency services of your location during critical medical emergencies. The Pixel Watch 3 starts at $350; add $100 for cellular connectivity, and/or $50 for the larger size. It goes on sale starting Sept. 10. Meanwhile, the new Pixel Buds Pro 2 are designed around a new custom chip that Google calls the Tensor A1. This enables improved audio processing and ANC that's twice as strong while being more efficient. Battery life runs eight hours (30 with case) even when using ANC. The buds are also 27% smaller and 24% lighter compared to the previous version. A unique design for the in-ear portion lets you optionally twist them for a tighter fit, such as during workouts. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 come in four colors and ship Sept. 26 for $229. |
Brabus 900 Rocket R v 900hp AMGs: DRAG RACE - [off-topic] 11:42 AM EDT - Aug,10 2024 - post a comment Who's ready for an epic Brabus showdown?!
We've got our hands on the incredible Brabus 900 Rocket R, and it's set to face off against two 900 Superblacks - one based on the GLS, and one based on the G63!
So let's see how these epic machines compare. The 900 Rocket R is based on the Porsche 911 Turbo S. The standard car is powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six that provides 650hp and 800Nm of torque. However, Brabus has added two high-performance turbos, while also making several other tweaks. As a result, the Rocket R produces an incredible 900hp and 1,000Nm! This power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox, weighing in at 1,640kg.
The Rocket R is limited to just 25 units, and from new, it costs an eye-watering £400,000!
Alongside it, we have the 900 Superblack GLS and the 900 Superblack G63. Both cars usually come with a 4-litre twin-turbo V8, but these engines have now been uprated to 4.5-litre, and have both had two new turbos added. As a result, these cars now produce 900hp and 1,250Nm (although the torque has been limited to 1,050Nm).
The G63 weighs in at 2,700kg, while the GLS weighs 2,800kg. And while the G63 costs £360,000, the GLS 'only' costs £330,000.
So the winner of this race may be a foregone conclusion, but how will the two Superblacks compare? There's only one way to find out for sure...LET'S RACE!

Stop, Intel's Already Dead! - [hardware] 01:52 PM EDT - Aug,07 2024 - post a comment AMD's Zen 5 processors are here, starting with the Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X. Is it worth it to upgrade from first gen 3D V-Cache, let alone the 7000 series chips? Time to find out!

NVIDIA GeForce 560.81 WHQL Game Ready Drivers - [gaming] 04:19 PM EDT - Aug,06 2024 - post a comment NVIDIA today released the latest version of its GeForce Game Ready drivers. Version 560.81 WHQL comes with optimization for "Hunt: Showdown 1896." The drivers also add optimal settings for games such as "Chained Together," "Dungeonborne," "Once Human," and "Stormgate." A game bug with "Farming Simulator 22" that caused the game to crash during the loading screen with certain RTX 30-series and RTX 40-series GPUs on the older 560.70 series drivers, has been fixed. Also fixed is a bug that causes games to stutter if the overlay GPU metrics are stuck at 0%; the full range of available display refresh-rates not being exposed on some monitors; and NVIDIA container service exhibiting unusually high CPU utilization.
It is also worth noting that owners of still-supported Nvidia graphics cards and some very old processors should stay away from Nvidia's recent updates. The company recently stopped supporting chips without certain instructions, so installing R555+ drivers on systems, say, with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and the RTX 750 Ti, will result in the entire system crashing to the blue screen of death. |
Starliner's departure from ISS might be delayed for weeks due to a critical software update - [briefly] 04:12 PM EDT - Aug,06 2024 - post a comment There is no new official information on the prospects of the long-delayed, ongoing Starliner test mission, which was supposed to demonstrate that Boeing's crewed module can safely carry the astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS). However, at least some people familiar with the mission are willing to share what's going on.
One such information is that SpaceX's Crew Dragon is now more likely to carry astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams back home than the struggling Starliner. The latest one, though, is equally interesting. It seems that the Starliner is currently unable to come back to Earth on its own if its crew is forced to stay on the ISS, Ars Technica reported.
The issue is directly connected to the possibility of the Starliner crew being reassigned to Crew Dragon (whose workhorse Falcon 9 rocket had its own problems recently). In that case, Boeing's module would have to separate from the ISS autonomously and perform a reentry to the atmosphere before - hopefully - a safe landing.
However, Ars Technica's multiple insider sources have confirmed that Starliner's flight software in its current configuration lacks the code to perform an autonomous undocking. The reason is unknown. It is surprising, specifically, because Starliner have already performed this exact maneuver in 2022 during the previous uncrewed test flight.
Ars reported that updating Starliner's flight software is "non-trivial" and "significant," according to its insider sources, and it might take up to four weeks.
This is a problem that goes beyond Starliner. Insiders expect NASA to announce a delay of SpaceX's Crew-9 mission as soon as this week - from August 18 to September 24. Crew Dragon missions typically carry four astronauts; however, one of the alternatives to a nominal Starliner return is to launch Crew-9 with only two astronauts, leaving two seats empty for a return trip with Wilmore and Williams.
It is understood that NASA has not yet made a definitive decision. In the meantime, the agency is being criticized for a lack of transparency regarding the mission, which brings back memories of NASA's darkest days. |
600hp GR Yaris v Lambo Aventador SV: DRAG RACE - [briefly] 11:05 AM EDT - Aug,03 2024 - post a comment Here's a match-up you didn't know you needed... Until today!
We've got Yianni lining up in a Lamborghini Aventador SV, and he's about to go head-to-head against Mat in a ridiculous 600hp Toyota GR Yaris!
So let's take a closer look at this ludicrous Yaris. It rolls up with a fully built 1.6-litre 3-cylinder turbo engine that produces a ridiculous 630hp and 430Nm of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed sequential manual gearbox, and almost every aspect of the car has been modded and upgraded! It doesn't come cheap though - all in it costs an eye-watering £130,000!
Then we come to the Lambo. It's powered by a 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 that delivers 750hp and 690Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed automatic gearbox, and as new it costs around £238,000.
So the Lambo's up on power, but can this little pocket rocket snatch the victory? There's only one way to find out... LET'S RACE!

Ryzen 9000-series Pricing Leak Ahead of Launch - [hardware] 01:16 PM EDT - Jul,31 2024 - post a comment Official Ryzen 9000-series pricing has leaked just ahead of the launch, courtesy of Newegg and BestBuy in the US. Serial leaker @momomo_us over at X/Twitter managed to snap screenshots of the pricing before it was removed by the retailers. This might've been because of a mixup, since the Ryzen 9000-series was supposed to launch today, before being pushed back to the 8th and 14th of August respectively, depending on the SKU. Admittedly the pricing might still change, but it's highly likely that the leaked pricing is AMD's MSRP for the four new CPUs, as both of the retailers have listed identical pricing for the four SKUs.
The good news for prospective buyers of the new CPUs is that AMD has lowered the pricing across the board compared to the launch pricing for the Ryzen 7000-series, especially at the higher-end. The Ryzen 5 9600X should have an MSRP of US$279, followed by US$359 for the Ryzen 7 9700X. That's US$20 and US$40 lower than their Ryzen 7000-series counterparts respectively. The Ryzen 9 9900X should retail for US$449, followed by US$599 for the Ryzen 9 9950, both US$100 less than their Ryzen 7000-series counterparts. This could in part be due to the expected X3D parts coming at a later point in time and AMD now knowing it has to offer the non X3D SKUs for a more competitive price point. |

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra - No iPhone Look - [mobile] 01:13 PM EDT - Jul,31 2024 - post a comment Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra will have a major design change. Lately, Samsung has been taking a lot of cues from Apple, and I was worried the Galaxy S25 Ultra might end up looking like an iPhone. But it looks like that's not happening, thankfully. Samsung will use their own design for the Galaxy S25 Ultra instead of taking inspiration from Apple which is great news.

Delta Airlines is reportedly planning to file lawsuits against CrowdStrike and Microsoft - [crime-law] 12:25 PM EDT - Jul,31 2024 - post a comment CNBC reports, via unnamed sources, that Delta has hired David Boies to get its lawsuits ready against the two companies. Boies has some experience with dealing with Microsoft. He helped lead the US government's case anti-trust case against the company in 2001 over Microsoft's use of Internet Explorer bundled inside Windows.
Delta has yet to officially comment on the hiring of Boies or any plans to launch a court case against Microsoft or CrowdStrike. The airline canceled thousands of flights over the weekend of July 19 due to its Windows PCs being hit with the botched CrowdStrike update.
CNBC's report claims the monetary damages caused by all those flights being canceled could be between $350 million and $500 million. It added that the airline has had to offer 176,000 refunds or other kinds of reimbursements to its customers for those canceled flights. One estimate claims that over $15 billion in monetary damages were created by the CrowdStrike outage worldwide among all the businesses that were affected.
CrowdStrike's CEO George Kurtz quickly apologized publicly for the faulty security update just hours after it was released on July 19. Both CrowdStrike and Microsoft worked with their customers to bring the Windows PCs affected by the update back online. Late last week, Kurtz announced that over 97 percent of the Windows sensors that were hit by the outage were back online but vowed that the company would keep working to get all those PCs back online.
CrowdStrike made a feeble attempt to compensate the IT admins who were working to restore PCs affected by the update by sending them a $10 Uber Eats digital discount code. That code ended up being pulled from some people who received it. |
New Federal Ruling Prohibits Warrantless Phone Searches by Border Agents - [crime-law] 02:11 PM EDT - Jul,29 2024 - post a comment A federal court in New York has ruled that US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents must have probable cause and may need to obtain a warrant before searching the contents of a cell phone, even at border areas in their jurisdiction. This closes a loophole that previously considered phone searches part of "routine" searches for contraband, which have a categorical exception that does not require a warrant. The new ruling affirms a higher standard of privacy for phone contents, noting that "reviewing the information in a person's cell phone is the best approximation government officials have for mindreading." Therefore such searches are considered "a nonroutine search to which a categorical border search exception does not apply." The case was decided in the US District Court of the Eastern District of New York. It involved a US citizen - suspected of purchasing or possessing child sexual abuse material - detained at JFK airport upon re-entering the US. |

The feature works wirelessly, over Bluetooth. It provides full file access, such as move/copy, rename, and delete. The feature does require some setup within the settings of the Link to Windows app. Although it's in beta now, this version of Link to Windows is already part of Microsoft's "Release Preview" channel, indicating it should be finalized and released for all Windows 11 users soon. |

Galaxy Watch Ultra vs Watch 7: Scientific Review - [gadgets] 03:32 PM EDT - Jul,25 2024 - post a comment The Galaxy Watch Ultra and Galaxy Watch 7 have a new sensor that Samsung claims has improved performance. But is that true? Today we will find out by systematically testing the heart rate tracking performance, sleep stage tracking and GPS tracking. And we'll also take a quick look at some other features like blood pressure, FTP and body composition. I want to get this video out as soon as possible, so unlike my normal videos, I will not show you all results at once, but I will show you the results as I get them. So I'll be as surprised as you and we will find out together how good the Galaxy Watch Ultra and Watch 7 are in my first test. This will be an initial review, and the full review will come in a week or two.
But what is my overall initial conclusion. Well, the Galaxy Watches aren't terrible, but they are definitely showing some issues. The Sleep stage tracking appears to be similar to what it has always been, the heart rate tracking for indoor cycling was surprisingly bad, and for outdoor cycling it was surprisingly good. The heart rate tracking does seem to have changed compared to previous generations of galaxy watches, and the new sensor appears to be especially good for outdoor cycling when tested on me. The GPS on the Galaxy Watch Ultra was quite good in my first test, though I cannot explain why it did better than the Watch 7, since from what I understand both have the same dual frequency GPS system. So, overall the Galaxy Watches show some improvement over the previous generations, but I am not sure yet how big that improvement actually is. I'll do more testing over the next weeks, and share my comprehensive review then, which will also include a test on my colleague Raphael.

AMD delays the launch of its Ryzen 9000 CPUs by one to two weeks - [hardware] 05:26 PM EDT - Jul,24 2024 - post a comment Last week, AMD announced that the first Ryzen 9000 series of desktop CPUs would launch on July 31. However, today the processor company announced a slight delay in the release of those powerful PC chips. AMD spokesperson Stacy MacDiarmid said there were no actual issues with the Ryzen 9000 CPUs themselves. Rather it was discovered that some of those processors did not go through all of the required testing that the company performs. The delay was to make sure all the new chips went through AMD's testing systems.
The new Ryzen 9000 CPUs will also be the first to use AMD's Zen 5 architecture. The most powerful CPU in the family is supposed to be the Ryzen 9 9950X which will have 16 cores, 32 threads, and a maximum clock speed of 5.7 GHz.

Intel's Biggest Failure in Years: Confirmed Oxidation & Excessive Voltage - [hardware] 04:50 AM EDT - Jul,24 2024 - post a comment Intel has finally published a statement about the instability of its Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh CPUs in the 13th & 14th Gen families of CPUs. The Intel 14900K, 13900K, and their alternative CPUs in the same generations now have a confirmed set of issues. Intel has formally acknowledged in a reddit post that its 13 Series CPUs had oxidation issues during at least one point of manufacturing history. It did not adequately define a date range. Intel also confirmed that it has excessive voltage issues on 13th & 14th Gen CPUs alike. The company has failed to adequately reinforce its support "commitments" for customers and has failed to give date ranges or serial numbers to help consumers identify if they are affected. Intel hasn't stated to what extent different CPUs are affected. To our understanding, K-SKUs are hit the hardest.

Lamborghini Revuelto Review - 0-60mph and REAL World Test! - [off-topic] 05:33 AM EDT - Jul,20 2024 - post a comment The Revuelto is Lambo's all-new flagship supercar, and Mat's about to discover whether it's a worthy successor to the almighty Aventador.
For starters, let's check out the performance! The Revuelto rolls up powered by a 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 along with three electric motors - one on the rear axle, and two on the front. Combined, this all-new supercar produces an almighty 1,015hp and 1,062Nm of torque! It can fly to 60mph in just 2.5 seconds, and it has a crazy top speed of 218mph!
Regarding the design, the Revuelto is unmistakable as a Lamborghini. Up front, it looks extremely aggressive, with huge air intakes flanking the front splitter and surrounded by huge three-piece DRLs. The side profile looks similar to the Aventador (that's no bad thing, mind), and around the back the most prominent feature is the huge centre-placed quad tailpipes. Naturally, there's also a massive diffuser, and the glorious V12 is left open to the elements! Naturally, though, it's totally sealed so nothing can get in!
Step inside and the interior is very similar to the Aventador. There's a new set of digital dials that are super bright and offer a load of adjustments, while there's also a large infotainment screen in the centre of the dash. However, while it looks smart, it's not the best system. It also seems like Lambo has taken a leaf out of Tesla's book, with the indicator stalk removed and replaced by buttons on the steering wheel!
So the Revuelto looks and sounds incredible, but it doesn't come cheap. Before you've added any options, it will set you back around £450,000! So is it worth it? You'll need to stick with Mat and Yianni to see for yourself!
