Leaked specs of the Google Pixel 9a suggest you will be getting more for the same price - [mobile] 11:02 AM EDT - Oct,30 2024 - post a comment According to the fresh leak (via Android Headlines), the Pixel 9a could sport a 6.3-inch Actua display with a 60-120Hz adaptive refresh rate panel, which would put the device in line with the flagship, Pixel 9 and 9 Pro, in terms of screen size. The Pixel 9a is also tipped to measure 154.7 x 73.3 x 8.9, making it bigger in all aspects than both the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro.
Despite its large size, the phone reportedly weighs just 186 grams, a bit lighter than the Pixel 8a (188 grams). This could also mean that Google might have opted for polycarbonate instead of glass for the back panel. The Pixel 9a is expected to be powered by the Tensor G4 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB and 256GB storage options.
The phone could rock a 5000mAh battery and stick with 18W charging for wired and 7.5W for wireless charging. Coming to the cameras, the Pixel 9a is rumored to feature a 48MP primary camera and a 13MP ultra-wide lens. It was earlier reported that it will be the same 48MP lens as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which boasts f/1.7 aperture, helping the phone to capture better low-light photos. The selfie camera will stay at 13MP.
Google is also reportedly planning to keep the price of the Pixel 9a the same as the Pixel 8a, i.e., $499. Based on the leaked specs, you will be getting much better value and upgrades for the same price over the predecessor. The phone may also debut in two new color options. |

WhatsApp finally gets the ability to save a contact exclusively to WhatsApp - [software] 05:04 PM EDT - Oct,22 2024 - post a comment Until now, WhatsApp has lacked the capability to store contacts within itself, relying instead on iOS and Android's default contacts app. For example, to add someone to your WhatsApp list, you first had to save their name to your phone's contacts. This is finally changing with the new Contacts feature in WhatsApp. This feature allows users to save a contact exclusively to WhatsApp. This is useful for users who want to separate personal and business contacts when managing multiple WhatsApp accounts on their phones. Additionally, since WhatsApp is no longer dependent on smartphone OS contacts, you can now add and manage contacts from the WhatsApp Web and Windows experiences.
Furthermore, these WhatsApp-exclusive contacts can be restored if users lose or change their smartphones. The WhatsApp team highlighted that this new Contacts experience will eventually enable users to manage and save contacts by usernames. Usernames on WhatsApp will eliminate the need for phone numbers when messaging someone. WhatsApp will share more information on username support in the future.
To allow users to save their contacts and automatically restore them directly through WhatsApp, the WhatsApp team developed a new encrypted storage system called Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS). This update marks a significant step towards greater privacy and flexibility on WhatsApp. With the upcoming username feature, users can look forward to even more control over their messaging experience. |
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is thinner, lighter and gets larger screens - [mobile] 03:42 PM EDT - Oct,21 2024 - post a comment Special Editions of products don't usually offer a slew of improvements over the standard versions - they're often just a bit prettier. With the Special Edition model of the Galaxy Z Fold, however, Samsung has made a foldable that is not only thinner and lighter than the Z Fold 6, but it also has more memory, a bigger screen, and an upgraded camera.
The new device is 3 grams lighter and 1.5mm thinner than the Z Fold 6, making it the thinnest and lightest model in the Galaxy Z Fold series at 10.6mm and 236g.
A thinner and lighter foldable is always welcome, as is the news that the displays in the Special Edition are larger. The outer screen is increased from 6.3 inches to 6.5 inches, while the inner display jumps from 7.6 inches to 8.0 inches (20:18 ratio), or 3.1% and 5.2% larger, respectively. That gives the new Samsung foldable the same internal screen size as the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. |
Mozilla advises Firefox users to update if they want their browser add-ons to keep working - [briefly] 03:20 PM EDT - Oct,21 2024 - post a comment Mozilla is reminding Firefox users that a necessary root certificate expires soon and that older browser versions could become a security and usability nightmare in a few months. Starting March 14, 2025, Firefox versions older than 128 (ESR 115.13) containing the expired certificate will likely cause "significant" issues with add-ons, content signing, and streaming of DRM-protected media.
Failing to update Firefox before next March means losing features relying on remote functionality. Many installed add-ons will become disabled, and other systems that require content verification could also break. The issue affects Firefox editions for Android and Windows operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. Those with iPhone or iPad versions of Firefox should be okay.
Mozilla's FAQs explain that a root certificate authenticates browser content as trusted. When a certificate expires, Firefox cannot verify content anymore. The newest versions of Firefox and other Mozilla software using the same root-of-trust model include a new root certificate that will prevent the expiration issue in March 2025.
Mozilla is likely trying to prevent the chaos experienced by Firefox users in 2019 when an expired certificate suddenly borked many instances of the open-source browser. Today's Firefox market share is much lower than five years ago, but we're still talking about millions of users potentially becoming vulnerable to the expiration issue. ome add-on developers have expressed concern over how Mozilla is managing the problem. One developer said Firefox should clearly state what could happen on all the affected platforms. Otherwise, disgruntled users could direct their complaints directly to add-on programmers. One-star review bombing campaigns after the certificate expires could also be part of the deal.
Mozilla advises users to update to Firefox 128 on each device with the browser installed, which is the best practice to avoid this and other issues. The latest release always provides significant performance improvements and important security fixes. Mozilla released Firefox 128 and ESR 115.13 on July 9, 2024, so there have been minor incremental updates since then. The most current version is Firefox 131.0.3. |
Android 15 Exits Beta, Starts Rolling Out - [briefly] 03:22 PM EDT - Oct,15 2024 - post a comment Android 15 is finally, officially launching, starting today with Pixel devices. This version had an unusually long beta testing period. Among many new features, the biggest may be a suite of new anti-theft features. Most interesting is Theft Detection Lock, which uses AI and the phone's sensors to detect when a phone may have been snatched and automatically lock it. Google has also added "authentication requirements for settings targeted by thieves, like removing your SIM or turning off Find My Device, and will lock down your device if we sense multiple failed attempts for apps and settings." These features are not necessarily on by default, often needing to be activated manually in Settings. Android 15 also brings "Private Space", a place to hide sensitive apps behind an additional layer of authentication. Finally, Android 15 brings a standardized way for carrier messaging apps to send and receive messages via satellite. Android 15 should come to Samsung and other Android phone brands in the coming months. Google is also using the Android 15 update for Pixel phones to do a new "Feature Drop" with new Pixel-exclusive features. This includes Audio Magic Eraser, to clean up audio in your captured videos. The camera app gains a new Underwater mode, to capture better colors underwater. Finally, the Pixel Weather app now includes a three-part pollen tracker for seasonal allergies. |

Microsoft Recall Mandatory on Windows 11 24H2 - WTF - [security] 04:36 PM EDT - Oct,12 2024 - post a comment So is Micrsoft Recall installed and running on every pc? It seems to be installed on 24H2 and is Enabled by default, which it should not be. Its running as a dependency in File Explorer. You can disable the Recall feature by using the commands below. Remember to use Recall, you would need a Copilot + PC. You activity and data is NOT being recorded in 24H2. Also Recall data is stored on the PC if you use Recall. My only concern is, why was RECALL enbled by default? Microsoft said it would be a opt in.

Latest Asahi Linux Brings AAA Windows Games to Apple M1 MacBooks With Intricate Graphics Driver and Translation Stack - [gaming] 09:03 AM EDT - Oct,12 2024 - post a comment Asahi Linux is a project that aims to bring Linux to Apple Silicon Macs-a task that has proven rather difficult, thanks to the intricacies of developing a bespoke GPU driver for Apple's custom ARM GPUs. In a recent blog post, the graphics developer behind the Asahi Linux Project showed off a number of AAA games, albeit older titles, running on an Apple M1 processor on the latest Asahi Linux build.
To run the games on Apple Silicon, Asahi Linux uses a "game playing toolkit," which relies on a number of custom graphics drivers and emulators, including tools from Valve's Proton translation layer, which ironically was also the foundation for Apple's Game Porting Toolkit. Asahi uses FEX to emulate x86 on ARM, Wine as a translation layer for Windows apps, and DXVK and vkd3d-proton for DirectX-Vulkan translation. In the blog post, the Asahi developer claims that the alpha is capable of running games like Control, The Witcher 3, and Cyberpunk 2077 at playable frame rates. Unfortunately, 60 FPS is not yet attainable in the majority of new high-fidelity games, there are a number of indie titles that run quite well on Asahi Linux, including Hollow Knight, Ghostrunner, and Portal 2. Amusingly, the custom driver used by Asahi Linux is the only driver currently available for Apple Silicon that conforms to OpenGL, OpenCL, and Vulkan APIs. Gaming, of course, isn't the only focus for Asahi Linux, and the team has already started implementing general purpose x86 emulation to Asahi Linux for more generalist and workstation workloads. Asahi Linux is based on Fedora 40, and ships by default with KDE Plasma as the desktop environment, and it has support for all manner of Mac computers with M1 through M2 Pro and M2 Max SoCs, with varying degrees of hardware support. The distribution is freely available to download on the Asahi Linux homepage for anyone wanting to try it out-be sure to check out the support matrix to know what hardware is and isn't supported, since it is still an alpha, and there may be issues with audio, certain ports, and features like Touch ID. |
Intel Core Ultra 285K, 265K, & 245K CPU Specs: Bending Fix, Power Reduction, & Prices - [hardware] 03:05 AM EDT - Oct,11 2024 - post a comment Intel's Arrow Lake CPUs have a release date for October 24 and just got announced, including specs and prices for the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K, Core Ultra 7 265KF, Ultra 5 245K, and Ultra 5 245KF. The new CPUs debut major architectural changes for the desktop platform. Thus far, we only have first-party benchmark data: Intel is claiming huge power consumption reductions and efficiency improvements, but at the cost of lower total performance. Intel's raw gaming performance will be roughly equal with the 14900K, according to Intel itself, and sometimes regressive. We'll have a lot of power testing to do.
