Linux Mint 22.1 is nearly here - [software] (Mint) - 05:18 AM EST - Jan,11 2025 - post a comment Linux Mint 22.1 'Xia', which got a beta release in December, is now undergoing final testing of its ISO before the stable version is made available for everyone. According to the Linux Mint website, the Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce editions are all undergoing testing right now and if they pass, they will start to filter out to the Linux Mint mirrors before an official announcement is made a couple of days later.
Despite the fact that it's only a point release in the Mint 22 series, it is still a substantial update. It comes with new power modes, Night Light integrated into the settings, Cinnamon 6.4, new artworks, and other improvements.
For those not familiar with Linux Mint, versions 22, 22.1, 22.2, and 22.3 will all be based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and receive updates until 2029. Unlike other operating systems, it's not necessary to stay on the latest point release, if you're happy with version 22, you can stay on that until 2029 with no issues or nagging.
Linux Mint adopts a very conservative ethos where new changes come incrementally, giving you time to get used to the changes. Given this fact, it's particularly popular among people who are more bothered about getting work done, rather than tinkering with their system. The Cinnamon edition, with its taskbar, isn't that different from Windows, making it popular with people who move from Windows to Linux Mint.
If you want Linux Mint 22.1 quickly after it passes the ISO testing, the best place to check will be on third-party mirrors, as it tends to arrive there first so they can be linked to in the official announcement a few days later. If you already run Mint 22, you'll eventually be able to upgrade via the Update Manager and if you are running the 22.1 beta, you'll also be able to upgrade just by applying available updates. |
AT&T Will Automatically Credit Customers for Outages - [briefly] 04:43 PM EST - Jan,10 2025 - post a comment AT&T has announced a new policy of automatically crediting customers a full day of service when the company is at fault for wireless outages of an hour or more. The new " AT&T Guarantee" is similar to the company's ad hoc response to a major outage almost a year ago. For an outage lasting more than 24 hours, customers will be credited for each additional day of the outage. The new policy has plenty of fine print, however. It only applies to postpaid customers with accounts in good standing and excludes FirstNet customers. Outages beyond the control of AT&T are excluded, including "natural disasters, weather-related events, or outages caused by third parties." An "outage" means at least ten towers out for 60 or more minutes "resulting from a single incident". To qualify, the customer must have been connected to an affected tower right before the outage, and lose service for at least 60 consecutive minutes as a result of the outage. The credit will be calculated based on the customer's base service plan price, excluding device payments, add-on services, taxes, and fees. Bill credits will be applied within 1-2 billing cycles. The company is also announcing a similar policy for its fiber customers that kicks in at 20 minutes instead of 60. |

The 13 is a true flagship phone meant to challenge flagship phones from Samsung and Apple, while the 13R is an "affordable flagship" phone meant to offer high-end features for a more accessible $600 price. Both phones feature a 6,000 mAh battery, Snapdragon 8-series processor, at least 12 GB of LPDDR5x RAM, UFS 4.0 storage, 50 megapixel main camera with a Sony sensor, 50 megapixel telephoto camera, wide camera, Bluetooth 5.4, Wi-Fi 7, and an infrared emitter. The 13 has IP69 water resistance, while the 13R is rated IP65. Both have ~6.8" displays with up to 120 Hz refresh; the 13 has QHD+ resolution, while the 13R has resolution 17% sharper than the common FHD+. Compared to last year's OnePlus 12, the new 13 upgrades to an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader and the new Snapdragon 8 Elite chip (plus the larger battery and water resistance). The 13 can also capture 4K Dolby Vision or 4K at 60fps with Ultra Steady using all four cameras (even the front). Compared to last year's 12R, the new 13R has double the storage (now 256 GB), plus the added (2x/4x) tele camera, larger battery, more RAM, and water resistance. The 13 has Ceramic Guard protecting the display, while the 13R has the new Gorilla Glass 7i protecting both front and back. The new version of OxygenOS comes with Google Gemini and includes AI features like intelligent search within on-device documents, call transcription, photo un-blur, and photo Reflection Eraser. Despite the added features, OnePlus has managed to make the system files take up 5 GB less storage. OnePlus promises four years of OS upgrades and six years of security updates. Both phones are available starting today. The OnePlus 13 starts at $900 with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. A version with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage normally sells for $1000, but is available for $900 until February 7. The 13 comes in white, black, or a "Midnight Ocean" blue with microfiber "vegan leather" back. The 13R comes in black or white, and sells for $600 (with 12 GB RAM and 256 storage).

Samsung and Apple working on new battery tech to compete with Chinese OEMs - [technology] 09:46 AM EST - Jan,03 2025 - post a comment Chinese smartphone OEMs are popular for packing large batteries into their smartphones. In contrast, major players like Samsung and Apple typically opt for traditional battery capacities inside their phones. While Samsung's M-series and F-series include a few models with batteries as large as 7,000mAh, this trend doesn't extend to its flagship series. However, if the latest report is to be believed, then we may soon see bigger batteries inside Samsung and Apple smartphones.
It is tipped that Chinese smartphone manufacturers plan to launch more phones with bigger batteries as large as 7,000mAh to 8,000mAh starting next year. Reports suggest that Chinese OEMs aim to achieve this without adding bulk to their smartphones. In response, Samsung and Apple are ramping up their efforts, and are reportedly, developing new battery technologies to keep up with their Chinese rivals.

ESET recommends installing Linux if your unsupported Windows 11 PC can't update from 10 - [briefly] 05:08 AM EST - Jan,03 2025 - post a comment ESET Germany has published a new blog post about the upcoming end of support for Windows 10 and how it is going to affect around 65% or roughly 32 million PCs there. The security firm has expressed concern over this since the vast majority of desktop PC owners are still on the outgoing OS which will leave them vulnerable. As such, the firm recommends moving to Windows 11.
ESET Germany's IT security expert Thorsten Urbanski says (Google-translated to English):
It's five minutes to twelve to avoid a security fiasco for 2025. We strongly advise all users not to wait until October, but to switch to Windows 11 immediately or choose an alternative operating system if their device cannot be updated to the latest Windows operating system. Otherwise, users expose themselves to considerable security risks and make themselves vulnerable to dangerous cyber attacks and data loss
The situation is more dangerous than when support for Windows 7 ended in early 2020.
Even before the official date, at the end of 2019, only around 20 percent of users were still using Windows 7. Over 70 percent were already using the new Windows 10. The current situation is extremely dangerous. Cyber criminals know these numbers very well and are just waiting for the day when support ends.

Hopefully this helps users prevent mistakes in the future, but it's always worth taking each of these types of catastrophic failures seriously as we may learn something new. In this one, we at least learned a bit about the socket types.

Apple might finally stop embarrassing iPhone owners by boosting iPhone 17 refresh rate - [mobile] 04:08 AM EST - Dec,30 2024 - post a comment These days, even mid-range, affordable Android smartphones are stepping up their game with a 120Hz display. In contrast, the $799 standard iPhone 16 and $899 iPhone 16 Plus are still launching with a modest 60Hz display, which can be disappointing. However, there's hope for the next generation of iPhones, as Apple might be gearing up to boost the refresh rate. The news comes on the heels of a report by Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station stating that the standard version of the iPhone 17 series is likely to have a high refresh rate. The tipster adds that the information is based on supply chain materials.
While the exact refresh rate of the standard iPhone 17 is yet to be discovered, Apple is less likely to opt for a 120Hz refresh rate. Instead, the standard models could get a 90Hz refresh rate, while the 120Hz grade is reserved for the Pro and Pro Max models. Digital Chat Station hasn't provided more context, so we should take these claims with a pinch of salt.
In the meantime, Apple reportedly has a Slim/Air version of the iPhone 17 in the pipeline, which is supposed to replace the Plus models in the iPhone lineup. The device is tipped to be 2nm thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro and could also get a 90Hz display. |
NSO Group Found Liable for Hacking WhatsApp to Install Spyware - [security] 04:06 AM EST - Dec,30 2024 - post a comment A federal judge in California has declared that Israel-based NSO Group violated the U.S. Computer Fraud and Abuse Act when it designed its Pegasus phone spyware to leverage Meta's WhatsApp servers. NSO sells Pegasus to governments and law enforcement around the world. One of the ways Pegasus spyware can be installed on a victim's phone is via a modified WhatsApp client that uses WhatsApp servers. The spyware is installed remotely and silently, without user interaction. Meta claims that happened to more than a thousand targeted phones. The case will continue, to determine the civil damages owed by NSO. The case could be appealed. |

WhatsApp to stop supporting older Android phones starting January 2025, check full list here - [mobile] 02:05 AM EST - Dec,26 2024 - post a comment Meta-owned WhatsApp has announced that it will be dropping support for older Android phones starting January 2025. Notably, users will no longer be able to use the messaging platform on their devices running Android KitKat (Android 4.4). So, if you are still hanging an Android device with Android 4.4, it is time to say goodbye and get a new smartphone if you wish to continue using WhatsApp.
WhatsApp has undergone a lot of changes over the years and now is a feature-loaded communication platform. Recently, Meta announced that WhatsApp will drop support for multiple iPhone models running iOS 15.1 or below starting May 5, 2025. Affected devices include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. Now, something similar is going to happen with multiple Android models because Meta wants to implement new functionalities, advanced AI features, enhanced security standards, and more.
Reportedly, WhatsApp will stop supporting the following Android devices from January 1, 2025:
Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini

HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Starting January 1, 2025, these devices will no longer support WhatsApp and all media and chat history from WhatsApp will be deleted. It is strongly advised that you backup all of your data and transfer it onto a newer device. For users looking for an alternative, Telegram supports Android devices running Android 6.0 or above. So, old device owners will have to look for other messaging apps or upgrade their smartphones |
