Galaxy S25 Ultra vs iPhone 16 Pro Max vs....Everything Else! - [mobile]
05:56 AM EST - Feb,01 2025 - post a comment

In this comprehensive battery test, the host evaluates the performance of nine flagship smartphones to determine which has the best and worst battery life. The devices tested include the Pixel 9 Pro XL, OnePlus 13, Vivo X200 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, Oppo X8 Pro, Honor Magic 7 Pro, Galaxy S25 Ultra, Galaxy S24 Ultra, and Xiaomi 14 Ultra. The test is meticulously controlled, with all phones set to 150 nits brightness, 100% battery health, and connected only to Wi-Fi to eliminate unnecessary variables. A series of applications, including social media and demanding games, are used to assess battery performance.

Key observations include the variety of processors in use, ranging from Apple's A18 Pro to Snapdragon and Mediatek chips. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra, notably, has a smaller battery than its predecessor, which raises questions about its performance. The host also employs a thermal imaging camera to analyze heat generation during usage, revealing the Pixel 9 Pro XL runs the hottest while the iPhone remains the coolest.

After conducting a standby test overnight and active usage tests, results show a significant difference in battery longevity among the devices. The Vivo X200 Pro emerges as the champion, maintaining 15% battery life after an extensive testing period, while the Xiaomi 14 Ultra disappointingly falls short, dying the quickest. The battery performance rankings convey the importance of battery capacity, chip efficiency, and software optimization in determining a smartphone's endurance.

The hosts detail their frustrating experiences, share insights on stock tracking, and highlight the prevalence of scalping in the market. The video outlines the implications of this supply shortage on consumers and the gaming community, as well as on NVIDIA's reputation. The hosts also speculate on potential reasons behind the low supply, including strategic launch timing related to events like CES and external factors such as upcoming tariffs and the Chinese New Year. Ultimately, the video paints a picture of a 'paper launch,' where the excitement generated by the announcement of the RTX 590 is quickly overshadowed by the reality of its scarcity and the negative consumer sentiment that follows.

How China's New AI Model DeepSeek Is Threatening U.S. Dominance - [technology]
03:05 AM EST - Jan,27 2025 - post a comment

A little-known AI lab out of China has ignited panic throughout Silicon Valley after releasing AI models that can outperform America's best despite being built more cheaply and with less-powerful chips. DeepSeek, as the lab is called, unveiled a free, open-source large-language model in late December that it says took only two months and less than $6 million to build. The new developments have raised alarms on whether America's global lead in artificial intelligence is shrinking and called into question big tech's massive spend on building AI models and data centers. In a set of third-party benchmark tests, DeepSeek's model outperformed Meta's Llama 3.1, OpenAI's GPT-4o and Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 3.5 in accuracy ranging from complex problem-solving to math and coding. CNBC's Deirdre Bosa has the story. This video also includes Bosa's full interview with Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas.

Laptops Might Never be the Same - Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i - [hardware]
05:41 AM EST - Jan,22 2025 - post a comment

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i is a newly released laptop that showcases advancements in design and technology, particularly with its display and power efficiency. Featuring Intel's Lunar Lake CPU, the 9i aims to address the shortcomings of its predecessor, particularly in battery life and performance. The standout feature of the Slim 9i is its 14-inch POLED display, housed within a compact 13-inch chassis, which boasts impressive specifications such as a 4K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and 100% P3 color accuracy. Moreover, it incorporates the world's first under-display webcam, a feature that, while innovative, comes with some trade-offs in image clarity. The laptop also presents a stylish design, albeit one that may be prone to fingerprints and potential fragility due to its glass surface. However, Lenovo made some compromises in port selection, as it only offers two Thunderbolt 4 ports and lacks an HDMI or audio jack. Nonetheless, the Slim 9i provides a strong keyboard experience, solid audio performance, and respectable gaming capabilities, making it a promising choice for both productivity and casual gaming.

ChatGPT now allows you to schedule reminders and tasks - [briefly]
04:25 AM EST - Jan,15 2025 - post a comment

ChatGPT is likely the world's most popular chatbot, with around 300 million weekly active users as of December 2024. It has evolved significantly from the simple question-and-answer chatbot it was in late 2022 when it launched. Today, it functions as a full platform that can search the web, execute code with an inbuilt interpreter, and even remember previous conversations. In 2024, OpenAI released significant updates to the platform. You can find our recap here. Now, OpenAI is taking it even further. The company announced a new feature launching as a beta for ChatGPT paying customers, including those on the Plus, Team, and Pro subscription plans. This feature, called Tasks, will allow users to schedule reminders or frequent requests.

This means users will soon be able to ask ChatGPT to remind them to take out the trash every Wednesday evening, for example, and ChatGPT will send a push notification when the time comes. Web search is available to ChatGPT when handling your schedules. To try out Tasks, select the "4o with scheduled tasks" option from the dropdown menu in the ChatGPT interface. After selecting it, a modal will appear where you can type your instructions. There's a dedicated page where users can manage scheduled tasks, modify the name or instructions, adjust the schedule, and pause or delete notifications for existing tasks. ChatGPT may sometimes pull information from your conversation to suggest tasks. If you're concerned about this feature but don't want to pay for a subscription, don't worry. OpenAI typically tests beta features with paying customers before rolling them out to everyone. This time, it's no different, and Tasks will be available to more users once the beta period ends.

Linux Mint 22.1 is nearly here - [software]
(Mint) - 05:18 AM EST - Jan,11 2025 - post a comment

Linux Mint 22.1 'Xia', which got a beta release in December, is now undergoing final testing of its ISO before the stable version is made available for everyone. According to the Linux Mint website, the Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce editions are all undergoing testing right now and if they pass, they will start to filter out to the Linux Mint mirrors before an official announcement is made a couple of days later. Despite the fact that it's only a point release in the Mint 22 series, it is still a substantial update. It comes with new power modes, Night Light integrated into the settings, Cinnamon 6.4, new artworks, and other improvements. For those not familiar with Linux Mint, versions 22, 22.1, 22.2, and 22.3 will all be based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and receive updates until 2029. Unlike other operating systems, it's not necessary to stay on the latest point release, if you're happy with version 22, you can stay on that until 2029 with no issues or nagging.

Linux Mint adopts a very conservative ethos where new changes come incrementally, giving you time to get used to the changes. Given this fact, it's particularly popular among people who are more bothered about getting work done, rather than tinkering with their system. The Cinnamon edition, with its taskbar, isn't that different from Windows, making it popular with people who move from Windows to Linux Mint. If you want Linux Mint 22.1 quickly after it passes the ISO testing, the best place to check will be on third-party mirrors, as it tends to arrive there first so they can be linked to in the official announcement a few days later. If you already run Mint 22, you'll eventually be able to upgrade via the Update Manager and if you are running the 22.1 beta, you'll also be able to upgrade just by applying available updates.

AT&T Will Automatically Credit Customers for Outages - [briefly]
04:43 PM EST - Jan,10 2025 - post a comment

AT&T has announced a new policy of automatically crediting customers a full day of service when the company is at fault for wireless outages of an hour or more. The new "AT&T Guarantee" is similar to the company's ad hoc response to a major outage almost a year ago. For an outage lasting more than 24 hours, customers will be credited for each additional day of the outage. The new policy has plenty of fine print, however. It only applies to postpaid customers with accounts in good standing and excludes FirstNet customers. Outages beyond the control of AT&T are excluded, including "natural disasters, weather-related events, or outages caused by third parties." An "outage" means at least ten towers out for 60 or more minutes "resulting from a single incident". To qualify, the customer must have been connected to an affected tower right before the outage, and lose service for at least 60 consecutive minutes as a result of the outage. The credit will be calculated based on the customer's base service plan price, excluding device payments, add-on services, taxes, and fees. Bill credits will be applied within 1-2 billing cycles. The company is also announcing a similar policy for its fiber customers that kicks in at 20 minutes instead of 60.

Compared to last year's OnePlus 12, the new 13 upgrades to an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader and the new Snapdragon 8 Elite chip (plus the larger battery and water resistance). The 13 can also capture 4K Dolby Vision or 4K at 60fps with Ultra Steady using all four cameras (even the front). Compared to last year's 12R, the new 13R has double the storage (now 256 GB), plus the added (2x/4x) tele camera, larger battery, more RAM, and water resistance. The 13 has Ceramic Guard protecting the display, while the 13R has the new Gorilla Glass 7i protecting both front and back. The new version of OxygenOS comes with Google Gemini and includes AI features like intelligent search within on-device documents, call transcription, photo un-blur, and photo Reflection Eraser. Despite the added features, OnePlus has managed to make the system files take up 5 GB less storage. OnePlus promises four years of OS upgrades and six years of security updates. Both phones are available starting today. The OnePlus 13 starts at $900 with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. A version with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage normally sells for $1000, but is available for $900 until February 7. The 13 comes in white, black, or a "Midnight Ocean" blue with microfiber "vegan leather" back. The 13R comes in black or white, and sells for $600 (with 12 GB RAM and 256 storage).
