As many anticipated, Epic Games today formally gave us our first look at the Unreal Engine 5, via a new technical demonstration on Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5. In a new demo called “Lumen in the Land of Nanite”, the released footage is shown with the beautiful new footage that will be available on the next generation of hardware. The video also features tuning work by Brian Karis, Epic's graphics director of graphics, and special projects director Jerome Platteaux, who talks about what sets Unreal Engine 5 apart from previous iterations of the engine. In addition, the footage is claimed to run in real time and was captured directly from a PS5 kit. The demo is largely impressive and gives us one of our first glimpses of what games on the PlayStation 5 will look like. Not only are environments more detailed than ever before, but the dynamic lighting offered exceeds virtually everything we currently see; generation titles.
