The chaps over at ExtremeTech have rounded up some of the fastest wireless routers and client adapters from Belkin, Buffalo, D-Link, and Netgear to see how fast they perform in a real world setting with their own kind and among each other. Here's a taster:

Are you looking for draft 802.11n performance for your home network? Do you want it now? If you're not fazed by issues like interoperability, firmware upgradeability, and backwards-compatibility, there are a few things you can do to mitigate the risk of assembling an expensive but uncooperative wireless network.

Stick to a single brand and a single product line. Netgear and D-Link led the pack in our single-brand throughput tests, but interoperability varied from brand to brand. Don't expect all of your existing clients to work with the new hardware. If some don't, you may have to pony up for some new wireless equipment. No one ever said early adoption was cheap.

If you're looking at other brands, we strongly recommend buying products based on the same chipset. The major chipset makers have been promising interoperability among pre-n devices for a while now, but they clearly aren't quite there yet. If you can stick with hardware based solely on chipsets from Airgo, Atheros, Broadcom, or Marvell, you'll have a much better chance of getting high speed interoperability from a mixed set of clients and access points.
