NVIDIA GeForce 200M series notebook GPU technology preview - [hardware] 06:18 PM EDT - Jun,15 2009 - post a comment
Elite Bastards posted NVIDIA GeForce 200M series notebook GPU technology preview. Here's a bit:
Starting out in the mainstream segment, the GeForce G110M is replaced as you might expect with the more powerful GeForce G210M. Moving upwards into the performance sector, the previous GeForce GT 130M part is replaced by a choice of two offerings, either the GeForce GT 230M or GeForce GT 240M. Finally, the previous enthusiast level GeForce GTX 280M and 260M remain in place at the top of the tree, but these G92-based GPUs are now accompanied by the GeForce GTS 250M and 260M at slightly lower performance levels (hence the GTS rather than GTX moniker).
The most obvious variant between each of these parts is the number of Stream Processors available to them - At the low-end, the GeForce G210M features just 16 Stream Processors, while the two mid-range GT parts utilise 48 Stream Processors and the high-end GTS GPUs utilise 96 Stream Processors. Core clock speeds on these parts are generally set at either 500 or 550MHz, aside from the GeForce 210M which sports a higher 625MHz core clock to make up for its lack of raw pixel processing power. The same can be said of the GeForce 210M's shader clock, which sits at 1500MHz, while the other GPUs on show here sport various shader clocks from 1100MHz up to 1375MHz for the fastest GeForce GTS 260M part.
Aside from the low-end GeForce 210M with its 64-bit memory interface, all of the other parts here sport a 128-bit wide memory bus. However, things get interesting as we move beyond the GeForce GT230M, as all of the rest of these GeForce 200M parts sport 1GB of GDDR5 memory - Not only is this a first for NVIDIA, but it also effectively doubles the memory bandwidth on those parts as though they were sat on a 256-bit memory interface. This is represented in the slide above via the listed memory clocks for these parts, with the GeForce 250M and 260M actually utilising memory clocked at 800MHz and 850MHz respectively.
I have to confess that at the press briefing for this launch, I all but jumped out of my seat when I realised that we were, at long last, looking at some GT200-based derivative parts somewhere other than the high-end desktop market - It's been a long time coming, and no matter how well G92 has worn over the past couple of years it's good to see NVIDIA's newest technology filtering down to other price points and markets, albeit very belatedly. Does this mean we'll be seeing similar moves on the desktop to replace the GeForce 9800/ GeForce GTS 250 series of parts? Who knows, and quite possibly not with DirectX 11 surely likely to be the core focus of the company right now, but we shall have to see.
