Intel Pentium D 805 vs. Pentium 4 630, Overclocked Gaming Performance - [hardware]

Nevertheless, for just $140 US the Pentium D 805 is still incredibly cheap and if you were able to overclock this processor to say 3.60GHz, which many users have already done, how then would it match up to the Pentium D 630? Furthermore, if you were able to overclock the Pentium 4 630 to 4.00GHz, would it be much faster than the dual core 805? LegionHarware compared both processors at their standard frequencies and of course their maximum stable overclocked frequency using air-cooling:
The Pentium D 805 is cheaper and it can be paired with LGA775 motherboards as old as the 945P. Given how cheap these motherboards are now, it is possible to create a very powerful computer for next to nothing. Those that use their computer strictly for gaming and nothing else really would probably be best off with the Pentium 4 630, as it is slightly faster and will work flawlessly with any LGA775 motherboard.

However, not many are focused solely on just gaming, as other windows based applications will be used. The Pentium D 805 is far superior to the 630 when multitasking or for running multithreaded applications. Therefore the Pentium D 805 is a better-rounded processor than the 630 and again it is also cheaper. The power consumption of the Pentium D 805 is quite high which is a negative aspect of this processor. Under load this dual-core processor consumes more than 50% more power than the AMD Athlon64 3000+.

That said, using nothing more than the Intel retail box cooler the Pentium D 805 can easily achieve a 3.60GHz clock speed. Admittedly the Pentium 4 630 processor does run very hot at 4.00GHz when using air-cooling, though stability did not become an issue. Although, this processor can achieve 4.50GHz it does require water-cooling. The Pentium D 805 also overclocked to 3.80GHz without any stability issues providing water-cooling was used.

Building a Pentium D 805 system from the ground up is as affordable as it gets with the processor, motherboard (945P) and memory (1GB) combo costing just $350 US and that is providing you purchase high-quality components. Bottom-line is, for gamers and overclockers the Pentium 4 630 is probably a more attractive option. However, those that enjoy a bit of gaming but also use a wide range of applications on their computer, will most likely benefit more from the Pentium D 805.
