Intel 8 Core Xeon X5365 V8 - Tested in Games - [hardware]
07:24 PM EDT - Jun,08 2007 - post a comment

The chaps over at DriverHeaven have tested Intel's new 8 Core Xeon X5365 V8 hardware:
With extensive testing over a 3 week period we have found that no current mainstream game utilises all 8 cores, in fact only Supreme Commander would partially load 4 cores at population limit at "supreme AI" with multiple CPU opponents. Therefore testing games right now is a waste of time to ascertain the outright performance of the octo core system, however we will test "Ice Storm Fighters" a technology demo produced by Futuremark for Intel designed to showcase Intel's Quad Core CPU's. We will explain this later in the review. For those interested we can sum up that the Xeon 8 core system is no faster than the Quad core systems powering Supreme Commander and is actually slightly slower than the Extreme Edition X6800 with Oblivion.

So in closing, do I recommend this system to you? For general everyday use I would honestly have to say "no", unless you have a large bank balance and want cutting edge processing power. Equally so, if you are an artist or designer, and frequently use high end rendering or modelling applications, you will certainly enjoy the experience and will be suffering considerably less downtime throughout your working day. For extreme multitasking such as we detailed earlier in the review, there really is nothing out there that comes even close to this configuration.

As a multitasking designer myself I can honestly say, hand on heart that I am having a hard time reverting to my overclocked Quad QX6700 system, quite shocking to think that even at 3.5ghz it now feels slow!, but like most things I will soon re-adapt. Equally so, as a PC enthusiast I am excited about this high end multicore technology and the future we have in front of us once AMD get back in the game, so I will bid you adieu and see if I can track down someone on the black market to buy one of my kidney's.
