AMD announced today it has released a special Phenom 9600+ Black Edition quad-core processor with full access to clock multiplier control. Priced the same as the 9600+ standard edition, the Black Edition allows enthusiasts to tinker with the clock speed settings, to obtain higher clock speeds under extreme cooling. As icing on the cake, the Black Edition sells for the same price as the regular 9600 -- $283 in quantities of 1,000. Keep in mind that the Phenom 9600 Black Edition suffers from the same TLB erratum that plagues the Phenom 9500 and 9600. Motherboard manufacturers have provided updated BIOS that resolve the issue but the fix drops performance by roughly 10-20%, with the difference depending on the software being used. AMD will be providing an updated Overdrive utility that will turn off the TLB fix so that gamers and enthusiasts can obtain full performance.
