Yes. It is really very, very free. There's no prepayment, no minimum use, no subscription, no monthly fee, no nothing. You just download and install Skype and then you start calling. Both the caller and the number called must be in either the US or Canada. There are no strings attached

The only condition is that we have said free SkypeOut within the US and Canada is guaranteed to last until the end of this year - that is, until December 31, 2006. We're not quite sure yet what we will do after that. Maybe we extend the free period, maybe not. You'll hear more about this towards the end of the year.

Wow, this is going to be a few interesting months for the VOIP world. I wonder how some of the VOIP providers in Canada & US will respond!

Even if you're in the US, if your IP address is within 70.x.x.x-79.x.x.x, it won't work, except of course if you have credits.

BTW: IMHO, the move is a preemptive strike against AOL's "AIM Phoneline" service, which is expected to offer free inbound calls to all AOL Instant Messenger users later this month....

it doesn't work for me... says i still have to buy skype credit.


edit: Oh I see! you have to have skypeOut activated already in order for it to be "free"... so much for the freebie.
