AOL
announced that it is cutting 1,300 jobs, approximately 7% of its global
workforce, and will close its Jacksonville, Florida call center. Most of the
1,300 jobs lost are due to the closing of the call center but jobs will also be
lost at AOL's Tucson, Arizona and Ogden, Utah call centers. AOL cut 700 jobs and
closed its Orlando, Florida call center last fall bringing the total number of
layoffs to 2,000 in less than a year. AOL's first-quarter revenue slipped to
$1.98 billion from $2.13 billion a year ago. The unit lost 835,000 subscribers
on a year-over-year basis, as AOL transitions from a dial-up service provider to
a business primarily driven by advertising revenue from the AOL.com portal.
