Dual Core Pentium D 930 - [hardware]
04:11 AM EDT - Apr,29 2006 - post a comment

Neoseeker published a review of Intel's Pentium D 930. The results, a 1GHz overclock on air cooling, is impressive no matter how you slice it.
I was not disappointed with the improvements due to the move to 65nm - running at 4.125GHz at stock Vcore with stock cooling is no mean feat. Really the only thing I am disappointed with is the BIOS not allowing me to drop the multiplier to 14 - as the part has Speedstep, it is capable of running at lower multipliers. We're hoping that a BIOS update or another motherboard might loosen up this restriction which would hopefully yield even more overclocking headroom. And I do have to wonder if the 275MHz maximum FSB (1100MHz) is due to the FSB connected cores - although I really think its more a matter of not being able to dissipate enough heat at default voltages with stock cooling.

So what's there to say about this fine CPU? The D 930 is an overclocker's dream come true. And with recent price cuts its a very affordable 65nm dual core part. For a couple years AMD has been earning a lot of points with enthusiasts, but if you can look at the picture now without bias there's one interesting trend: Intel is fighting back. Their prices are getting better, their overclocking headroom is excellent, and more and more of their CPUs are very viable choices. Just take a look at our budget Pentium D 805 review, and how we cranked that baby up. This is pure, unadulterated enthusiast satisfaction.
