ATI vs. NVIDIA Gameplay in Oblivion & WoW - [hardware]

[H] Enthusiast take a look at three high-end MSI video cards - the X1800XT, X1900XT, and GeForce 7800 GTX GPUs. Yeah, NVIDIA versus ATI! They get to the bottom of the real gaming experience in Oblivion and others then take a dive into Widescreen gaming. Here's an excerpt:
Oblivion. It seems like it all comes down to Oblivion right now. This game has shown us all how puny our video cards really are in the grand scheme of things. There is no question though who holds the performance advantage in Oblivion. The MSI RX1900XTX was tearing it up in Oblivion; although we couldn't achieve the absolute highest settings the game has to offer, we came darn close at 1280x1024-closer than any other card. The amount of detail and the environments at these high settings is simply amazing in this game. Another feather in ATI's hat is its ability to allow us to use HDR + AA in Oblivion. Is this a sign of things to come? Will those 48 pixel shader processors and dynamic branching really make the difference in all the cool games to come out this year? Only time will tell, but right now it sure seems that way from what we've seen in F.E.A.R. and now Oblivion.

Other than those small bugs, which can be fixed, we saw no major image quality problems with any of the video cards. The RX1800XT and RX1900XTX have a special High Quality Anisotropic filtering option that greatly improves texture filtering on angled surfaces. We found it to really help in games like Oblivion, Call of Duty 2, World of Warcraft-basically any game that has large outdoor environments.  When you compare filtering at a 90 degree angle or Anti-Aliasing quality these days you tend to find very similar quality between current NVIDIA and ATI GPUs. There really aren't any major image quality differences that would be noticeable as you are playing the game. Both ATI and NVIDIA allow you to have Anti-Aliasing on alpha textures, which can improve image quality a great deal depending on the game. In a game like Oblivion, there is so much grass and trees and the game is already slow enough that it isn't an option you can use right now. Honestly, in Oblivion, you don't really need it; at 1280x1024 with HDR enabled and the in-game settings up all the way, the game looks so good aliasing isn't bad at all.
