VR-Zone take a look at the Nvidia GeForce GTX 285, which is essentially a higher clocked GTX 280. Here's a taster:

There are no surprises with the GTX 285 - It delivers the 10% increase in performance commensurate with its higher clockspeeds in most games. However, we find it rather disappointing that Nvidia used a smaller heatsink, causing temperatures to remain as high as they were on the GTX 280. Another area in which the GTX 285 falls short is power consumption, which remains nearly as high as before.

But even if we leave these issues aside, the GTX 285 is still not necessarily the card you want to be getting right now. AMD may lack a direct competitor to the GTX 285 at its current price of USD380, but the HD4870 X2 costs just USD70 more for a whole lot more potential performance. And we say potential performance because of the wide variability of Crossfire support. Where multi-GPU scaling is done well, the HD4870 X2 can easily leave the GTX 285 far behind. But when a game doesn't utilize multiple GPUs effectively, the gap between the two can get very close or even disappear.

AMD's ability to improve on Crossfire performance in the near future will greatly affect whether the HD4870 X2 is worth that extra amount. For now, Crossfire performance scaling is a mixed bag, and we can't say that the HD4870 X2 possesses greater value-for-money than the GTX 285 in all cases. Looking the other way in terms of price, the GTX 280 also offers good value now that retailers are dumping it in earnest - we've seen pricetags as low as USD340. The small performance advantage of the GTX 285 is, in our opinion, not worth the added cost.
