Intel to launch Pineview CPU for netbooks later this year - [hardware] 01:10 PM EST - Jan,20 2009 - post a comment According to
Digitimes, Intel plans to launch its next generation Atom CPU (codenamed
Pineview) in the second half of 2009 with a single-core version targeting
netbooks and a dual-core for nettops, according to sources at notebook makers.
Pineview will feature a 45nm process and built-in northbridge functions,
including a memory controller and IGP. Paired with the new Tiger Point
southbridge chip, the new netbook platform codenamed Pine Trail-M will be
offered at an even lower cost than previous generations. Compared to Atom N270
CPU platforms, Pineview's integrated CPU+northbridge design reduces the amount
of motherboard realestate used by up to 60%, from a total of 2174mm square for
the N270 and 945GC to 773mm square. Pineview will also utilize a four-layer PCB
design down from six layers which should reduce costs. Pineview's core
frequencies will be higher than the 1.6GHz of Atom N270 and its memory support
will also be improved from N270's DDR2 533 to DDR2 667. Although Pineview's
graphics core will still be the GMA 950, the GPU's core frequencies will be
increased from 133MHz to 200MHz. Pineview's maximum TDP will drop from 8W to 7W,
while the average power consumption will be only 2W. The CPU will also be
capable of using a fanless design. |
