Fudzilla
claims that's the price of a Core 2 Duo E7400 processor Intel plans to
unveil on October 19. It will cost $133 at launch. Just like the current Core 2
Duo E7300, the new chip will have a pair of 45nm cores, 3MB of shared L2 cache,
and a 1066MHz front-side bus. The E7300 currently retails for around $140, but
since it runs at only 2.66GHz, Intel will reportedly drag it down to $113 upon
the E7400's arrival. Fudzilla doesn't say if those changes will affect the Core
2 Duo E8400, which currently costs $170 and runs at 3GHz with a peppier
(1333MHz) FSB and twice as much cache. The E7400's arrival could turn the heat
up on AMD in the low end, as well. If the E7400 waltzed into e-tail listings
right now, it would be sandwiched between AMD's 2.4GHz, triple-core Phenom X3
8750 and the 2.2GHz, quad-core Phenom X4 9550-both comparatively handicapped in
everyday tasks because of their lower clock speeds.
