'Go West' hard drive manufacturer Western Digital has proudly
announced that it has
managed to produce platters with an areal density of 520 Gb/in2. Using its
own perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR)/tunneling magneto-resistive (TuMR)
head technology, Western Digital will be able to cramp in 640 GB on one platter,
almost doubling Samsung's current record of 334 GB per platter. With the new
technology, the company claims that 3TB hard 3.5-inch drives are on the horizon
and will be ready and shipping in 2010.
