AMD
Zone reports that AMD has released a processor called the
Athlon 64 X2
"Black Edition" 5000+. This new CPU isn't a new speed grade-indeed, it's
clocked at the same 2.6GHz clock speed as the regular Athlon 64 X2 5000+, and it
features the same 1MB of total L2 cache and 65W power envelope. However, the new
chip has an unlocked multiplier, which should allow users to overclock it as far
as it'll go without touching their motherboard's HyperTransport clock. According
to the site, this chip will consume 65 watts and cost $136 for people buying
1,000 or more.
