Back in early April, the
Displayport 1.1
specification was ratified by the Video Electronics Standards Association.
Samsung managed to be first with the introduction of a LCD panel that
supports the new DisplayPort interface. The 30 inch LCD Panel with DisplayPort
Samsung showed off supports a total data rate of 10.8Gbps. This is double the
data rate you get with current display interfaces. This speed enables Samsung to
display a 2,560x1,600px resolution image without any color smear. In a joint
undertaking with Genesis Microchip Inc, Samsung developed its 30" panel using a
new four-lane, 2.7Gbps/lane interface chip. The interface technology processes
2,560x1,600 pixels of graphics data at up to 10 bits of color depth or 1.07
billion colors, a feat that would normally require at least three DVI or four
LVDS interface chips. Mass production of the 30-inch panel is scheduled to begin
in the second quarter of 2008. There's no word yet on how much the display will cost compared to DVI-only alternatives, though.
