The chaps at
VR-Zone have appropriated one of Nvidia's upcoming GeForce 8600 GTS graphics
cards, and they've managed to overclock its GPU to a blistering 1006.81MHz. They
were also able to push the card's memory to 1266MHz. For reference, the default
clock speeds on VR-Zone's card appear to be 745MHz for the GPU and 1145MHz for
the memory.
Pushing the GPU to 1GHz did involve hardware voltage modding, but VR-Zone kindly
provides pictures and instructions for adventurous users ready to void their
warranties before the GeForce 8600 GTS even comes out. The site also has a few
benchmarks up: with the GeForce 8600 GTS running at 1GHz/1.266GHz on a Core 2
Extreme X6800 processor overlcocked to 3.2GHz, the test system was able to hit
scores of 7524 in 3DMark06 and 15324 in 3DMark05. It gives us an interesting
clue to what is under the hood of a 8600GTS...
