After slashing prices repeatedly since the introduction of Intel's Core 2 Duo
processors, AMD may be about to apply yet another round of price cuts to its own
chips. This time, according to a
Thomas Weisel Partners report quoted by DigiTimes, the chipmaker isn't
getting rid of its 90nm processors as fast as it would like. While it waits for
Chartered Semiconductor to begin production of 65nm Athlons-which is expected to
begin "soon"-AMD will supposedly cut prices in its entry-level 90nm lineup next
month. DigiTimes says the cuts will come on April 9, and they may not be slight
price adjustments: the site quotes reductions of 30-35% on average. FYI, the
entry-level 90nm processors in AMD's lineup currently include the single-core
Athlon 64s and Semprons, which are all near or below the $100 mark, as well as
some of the more affordable dual-core Athlon 64 X2s like the 3800+ and 4200+
models.
