At a news conference in Tokyo, Wikipedia co-founder and Wikia president
Jimmy Wales has announced that he has plans to build a search engine to
rival Google and Yahoo. He wants to take over as much as 5% of the search engine
market. Unlike Google, which keeps its search result ranking algorithms secret,
Wales aims to apply the same collaborative methodology that has popularized
Wikipedia to the search engine business. Reuters quotes Wales as saying, 'The
idea that Google has some edge because they've got super-duper rocket scientists
may be a little antiquated now." Wales believes collaborative search technology
"could transform the power structure of the Internet.'
