The chaps over at Hexus.net have a photo showing a Radeon X1950 graphics card inserted into a PCIe x16 slot on a PCB supplied with an additional 12V power. Notice that there are two x4 cabled PCI Express links delivering up to x8 bandwidth but it is strange that they didn't use two x8 cabled PCI Express links or one x16 PCIe link instead to offer a full x16 bandwidth. They're calling it Lasso and it'll go a bit further than having an external graphics card for a laptop. Lasso will be able to house multiple graphics boards providing what could frankly prove to be hilarious processing capabilities... and those of you keeping up with the GPGPU scene will know that it's not about games performance. Modern GPUs can do some serious general purpose wet-work, leaving the CPU cores to work on other things. There are some similarities between Lasso and XG Station although Lasso runs off cabled PCI Express while XG Station runs off ExpressCard interface. ASUS plans to switch over to cabled PCI Express too in their future XG Station with other cool features. Check out this VR-Zone preview for more details.
