ASUS EN7900GTX review - [hardware] 04:15 AM EST - Mar,16 2006 - post a comment
There
is a review of the ASUS EN7900GTX GeForce 7900 GTX
at Hardware Zone. Compared to its direct predecessor,
the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB, the GeForce 7900 GTX's core receives a 100MHz speed
bump to 650MHz while memory is tamed down by 100MHz DDR to 1600MHz DDR.
Unfortunately (or even fortunately), there seems to be no clear winner as the ATI Radeon X1900 XTX and NVIDIA's GeForce 7900 GTX each exchanging blows one after another in each test. However, it you were to weigh all the factors such as power consumption, operational noise, temperature and overall performance for a more balanced outlook, the GeForce 7900 GTX is perhaps the better of two despite the fact it isn't a top scorer across all tests.
While the overall balanced outcome suggests that the GeForce 7900 GTX might be a better graphics card to bet on your next gaming rig, there are two other factors that might just change your opinion immediately. The first factor is availability and the second is pricing, which is somewhat tied with the availability factor. At the moment, GeForce 7900 GTX faces low availability due to overwhelming uptake, but industry sources say that it won't disappear like its predecessor and would be back in stores rather shortly after a re-supply. Secondly, prices for the GeForce 7900 GTX can vary anywhere from US$499 to beyond US$599, and the question of availability could further affect this price range. In contrast, the Radeon X1900 series are available and are settling down at the US$549 mark or less. So depending on your needs and how long you plan to wait out, there is a 50/50 chance for both graphics cards. It's going to be tricky for the moment, but ultimately, if NVIDIA can push out the supply and keep the price in check, they might just be the more preferred graphics card in the ultra high-end segment. Of course, with both graphics cards performing about par on the grand scheme of things, loyalists would beg to differ from our point of view and just stick to their preferred company based on their past experience.
