Samsung has made a lot of investments in the fast charging technology over the past few years. In late 2017, the company built a graphene ball material for batteries that can support charging speeds up to five times faster than typical lithium-ion batteries. It also implemented 15W fast charging in its Galaxy S10 series. The South Korean tech giant is upping the ante by announcing today its new USB Type-C power delivery (PD) controllers for power adaptors that are capable of supporting up to 100W-charging. That means both chips can work on various other devices such as tablets, laptops, and monitors in addition to smartphones. The SE8A and MM101 power controller chips are built in accordance with the new USB-PD 3.0 specification for fast-charging. Both chips are also integrated with an embedded Flash to make it easier to modify its firmware in keeping with the latest specifications. Samsung says the SE8A is the industry's first such chip to combine a PD controller and Secure Element for an added layer of protection which includes security key storage, and compact encoding and decoding sensitive data within a device. Meanwhile, the MM101 supports the Advanced Encryption Standard algorithm for product verification and it features moisture sensing capabilities for safety during charging. Samsung is currently distributing samples of the MM101 to customers while the SE8A has already entered mass production.
