According to a study by market tracking agency Nielsen VideoScan,
Blu-ray movie sales have surpassed HD DVD movies sales in the USA thanks to
Sony bundling some PlayStation 3 game machines with a BD movie and a voucher for
another Blu-ray disc. Many of the PlayStation 3 game consoles included Talladega
Nights movie on Blu-ray and/or a voucher to purchase a Blu-ray movie for free,
meaning that there were several hundred of thousands of Blu-ray movies purchased
for free during the period. The market research report claims that the numbers
for the week ending January 7th demonstrate that for every 47.14 HD DVD movies
sold, there are 100 Blu-ray movies sold while PSX Extreme web-site claims that
during the following week, ending January 14th, the amount of HD DVDs sold would
be 38.36 for every 100 Blu-ray discs sold.
Ed.note: This original report completely gets it wrong. Pack-ins are not
included as sales. There is no giveaway, it's
a $10
rebate on select titles. Also
sales trends from
Amazon show BD taking a commanding lead. "Casino Royale" is the highest
selling HiDef title EVER on Amazon: by the way, it's Blu-ray exclusive. FYI, DVD
Empire lists actual sales: Blu-ray vs HD DVD - Week: 66.67% 33.33%, Month:
69.93% 30.07%, Year: 57.79% 42.21%. And Video Business shows for BD sales
leading 62% to 38% over HD DVD. The lead increases every week since mid
December. These are actual sales numbers provided by retailers. You can also

DVD and
Blu-ray.
