Adobe claims the GPU acceleration will enchance the performance of page display, zooming, and panning within PDF files. The application can now be accelerated by ATI and Nvidia graphics processors with Shader Model 3.0 support and at least 128MB of video memory, the very same that are needed to accelerate the Aero graphical user interface in Windows Vista. Acrobat Reader 8.0 may be downloaded for free here. "Use 2D GPU acceleration" may then be turned on by clicking a checkbox under the Edit-->Preferences menu of the application.
