UK tourist gets $20,000 phone bill after downloading two TV episodes - [mobile]

A British tourist got a nasty surprise after getting back off holiday and realising she had run up an eye-wateringly high mobile phone bill of £12,500. Patricia Al from South West London ran up the monster debt after using her O2 mobile as a modem to watch two episodes the BBC TV sitcom 'My Family' in Turkey. The hotel Wi-Fi cut out, which meant her phone - which was connected to her computer so it could stay charged - took over the download. The property consultant was charged an incredible £5,156, 97 for one episode and £5,453.80 for another. The bill came to £10,611. The 23-year-old, from Chelsea, was also charged over £2,500 for other data bundles she used on holiday. For that price she could have bought 323 complete TV box sets of the all 11 series. O2 say Patricia's bill was allowed to escalate because she had opted out of the 50mb roaming data cap and the £120 overseas bill limit. The company says they texted her on August 24 to let her know her bill had reached £5701.86 on the day she accidentally downloaded the first episode. The phone company has since reduced her bill by £6644.97 - for the data she used after August 24 until the end of her holiday.
