We haven't heard about curved or flexible displays for a while now, but LG appears to have been busy with panels that are flexible, rollable, and transparent. The company has just introduced an 18-inch OLED panel that is flexible enough to be rolled into a tube that's just 3cm across. The new panel, which has a resolution of 1,200 x 810, features a new polyamide film on its back (and not the typical plastic). So the panel gets more flexibility. The panel is also even thinner. LG has plans to produce televisions featuring this type of display at sizes of up to 50 inches. LG has also revealed a transparent panel, which is coming with 30% transmittance. Previous models could only reach around 10%. This means that the new panel will allow the picture to look much better and less hazy.
LG Display's SVP and Head of R&D, In-Byung Kang, said he is confident that "by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches". And the transparent panel of the future is expected to have a transmittance of 40%.
