AMD Socket AM2 3800+ X2 CPU reviewed - [hardware]

HardwareLogic takes a look at the 'budget priced' dual core processor for AMD's new AM2 line of processors, the X2 3800+ featuring the Windsor core. On one hand, the X2 3800+ looks to offer the same type of performance you'd expect from its predecessor, the s939 X2 3800+ it replaces, including the same 2GHz core speed and 512KB x2 L2 cache. However, the AM2 line of processors also introduces AMD's entrance into the DDR2 market, as well as a rumored dormant feature which could really shake things up.
Overclocking Performance - Very good overclocking considering AM2 is in its infancy. A final O/C of 2.58GHz is not spectacular, but the ability to push the X2 3800+ to FX60 or X2 5000+ speeds will allow you to save some cash and upgrade more than one component...while still enjoying a damn fine processor.

Cooling - I was surprised to find an all aluminum HSF instead of the newer copper cooler with heat pipes. However the X2 3800+ runs very cool at stock or moderately overclocked speeds

Final Thoughts - If you already own a s939 X2 its not worth upgrading right yet. That might change in the near future as AMD releases lower TDP processors...especially a 35W X2 3800+. As with its predecessor the s939 X2 3800+, the AM2 version is an outstanding product. Though not the cheapest, the fantastic performance should easily offset the price
