AMD Athlon64 FX-62 reviewed - [hardware] 05:49 PM EDT - Jul,02 2006 - post a comment
The chaps over at
T-Break reviewed the Athlon64 FX-62. Currently available at US$ 1200
(approximately AED 4500), the FX-62 is a 2.8GHz dual core CPU with 2MB L2 Cache.
Its based on the same 90nm Windsor core as the Athlon64 5000+ and supports
DDR2-800 modules. Here's a taster:
Generally speaking, the FX-62 is slightly faster than the FX-60 which is a
good thing as the FX-60 is pretty damn fast. By increasing the clock frequency
by 200MHz on the FX-62, AMD has managed to overcome the loss of performance
caused by the high latencies of DDR2. This makes the FX-62 the fastest CPU
currently available.
Since these CPUs are based on AMD's 90nm process, we weren't expecting much room
in the overclocking department. The best we could get out of the FX-62 was
3010MHz or slightly above 3.0GHz at default voltage. We didn't play much with
providing higher VCore but you could expect a few more MHz. AMD has improved
upon power consumption on their AM2 socket CPUs and they supposedly use lesser
power under load that their 939 counterparts. Unfortunately, we don't have any
equipment to test this out.
The only thing that stands in the way of the might FX-62 is Intel's upcoming
Core 2 CPU- as you saw in the benchmarks on the previous pages. Granted that the
Core 2 is still a few weeks away from being available, we doubt anyone would be
interested in buying a $1200 FX-62 along with a new motherboard and memory
modules when the E6600 which will probably cost a third of that and offer higher
performance with lower power consumption.
