Legion Hardware takes a look at the dilemma of upgrading from a NVIDIA GF 6600GT to a 7600GT.

There really is no reason why anyone would purchase a 256MB GeForce 6600GT for $110 US when the much faster 7600GS cards cost around $120 US. But then why not just save up those pennies and get a 7600GT for roughly $170, which is much faster than both the 7600GS and 6600GT. Right now the GeForce 7600GT is really the best value mid-range graphics card available and being the successor of the 6600GT it has to be!

Performance wise the 7600GT is amazing given its price range, games such as Doom 3, Quake 4, Far Cry and X3: Reunion were all playable at 1600x1200 with FSAA 2x + Aniso 8x enabled. The GeForce 6600GT on the other hand struggled to deliver playable performance at 1600x1200 with these quality settings enabled. However, those still stuck in the past, addicted to games such as UT2004 and Far Cry, are probably going to be just as happy slugging it out with the 6600GT, as the benefits of the 7600GT were minimal in these older games.

Bottom-line is the 7600GT is the best value mid-range graphics card available and it is an ideal upgrade solution for those with 6600GT graphics card or the equivalent. With gains as big as 177% in Doom 3, 100% in F.E.A.R, 94% in Quake 4 and 82% in X3: Reunion, the 7600GT is certainly a worthwhile investment...
